The Shanxi Grand is our company's contracted hotel in Taiyuan, and I've stayed here about ten times over the past few years. I believe it was Taiyuan's best hotel at one time, and with no famous chain names entering the market this is still the hotel of choice here. In any other major market such as Beijing, this hotel would not stand out at all.
Location. About 20-25 minutes' drive from the airport, and about a 5-minute ride downtown. (Good luck trying to get a cab that'll take you though! Many cabbies will refuse such a small fare here.) There's a disco and an electronics mart nearby, and a lot of restaurants on the street parallel to the one the hotel's on, but really nothing else worth mentioning within walking distance.
Room. During my most recent stay I had a business room on the 9th floor. I believe the only difference between a standard room and a biz room is the outdated computer in the room. (It's a Legend desktop computer, made by Lenovo before their name change, so you can tell how old it is.) The room has all the basic stuff you might need--work desk, side chair, side table with a mini water cooler, etc. It is by no means big, with very little walking space. Bathroom is similarly compact, with a small, shallow tub. Internet is free but a bit on the slow side. In most hotels that bill themselves as international there is usually a couple of sachets of complementary coffee in the room. None here. View on one side is the main street with construction across the street. Back of the hotel faces apartments. On this stay there was no hot water for about an hour, and the tv stopped working while I was watching BBC and didn't come back on for over an hour. I hadn't experienced these problems before, so maybe it was a fluke this time. Still...
Service. Your basic standard subpar service you would expect from most hotels here. A colleague of mine was at the front desk a good 30 minutes trying to get a nonsmoking room instead of a room heavily dosed with cheap air freshener.
Food. Both the breakfast and dinner buffets in the western restaurant offered a good assortment, but the food itself is average or just a tad above. The Chinese restaurant on the second floor has a fairly extensive menu. The room service menu is very limited; if you want to eat in your room I would suggest going to the restaurant to order from the menu and they will deliver it to your room. Prices are not overly expensive. A domestic beer from the room fridge is 10 rmb, import 20 rmb, Coke 10 rmb. There are two of each of these in the fridge and nothing else.
Basement bar. There are two bars next to each other in the basement level. Beware the one on the right (the one with a small stage and girls milling about). They have companion girls (as opposed to straight out prostitutes) that charge $30 (USD) just to sing a song.
If you need a hotel in Taiyuan there aren't too many good choices. Lower your expectations, think of this one as a solid 3-star and you'll be okay.
