This is my second review of the Pestana Caracas and it's gone downhill since we stayed last.
We first stayed at the Pestana a couple of years ago when it was shiny and new. There were some service issues but the style and newness of the property made up for this shortfall.
So, two years on…
We arrived following a long flight on a Tuesday afternoon. The cab dropped us off on the hotel’s driveway and we eventually managed to get the attention of a bell-boy.
Check in was relatively painless and we were shown to a twin room, not the queen that had been reserved and confirmed. This meant a wait outside the room whilst the bell-boy went down to reception to get another key. After a 15 hour flight and 2 hour cab-ride from the airport, this was just a pain we could have done without.
Ten minutes later and we were in our new room. Poor maintenance is clearly now an issue and the room was very scruffy. There were blood stains on the walls and curtains, an iron burn on the rug, and the rug had curled edges which created a safety risk (I tripped on it twice in several minutes). Hairs littered the bathroom and it just all felt a bit motel-ish. I firmly believe that a paid-for hotel room should be as clean, if not cleaner, than your own home. This fell way short of that standard.
The internet didn’t work in the room but we managed to log on in the lobby (slow service) as we’d heard there was an issue with in-room internet.
The night passed and we were surprised that we hadn’t received any calls from relatives, not one. And that’s very unusual. The next morning we tried to make an outbound call only to find out that the telephone lines had been down for two days. We appreciate that this might be out of the hotel’s control but it was unforgivable for the hotel not to make customers aware of this. This was why the internet wasn’t working, clearly. For me, communications are very important and I didn’t really want to have to make Skype calls from the lobby.
We took this up with the management who seemingly didn’t think it was important enough as they passed it to the GMs secretary to deal with. She met with us and promised to call us back. She didn’t and completely ignored us; even after we left her two telephone messages. There’s no excuse for this behavior. No question. Very rude indeed. We checked out the next day and went directly to the VIP Hotel who seemingly do know how to satisfy their guests.
In conclusion, the Pestana have given up and have a lot to learn about customer service if they want to step up to the plate.
Me, I’m done with the Pestana. End of. Take your dollars to the VIP instead.
