“Fabulous Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2011

We had a two night break at Manaton and we had a lovely time. The room was very comfortable as was the bed, with lovely bed linen. The decor was to a very high standard and lots of little extras that made it homely. The hosts were great, giving lots of useful advice on places to eat, how to get to places. Excellent breakfast served by a happy cheerful John....Thanks. Would stay there again and would recommend it. Mrs Rudge Sutton Coldfield.

“Pleasant owners - shame about bedrooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2011

John and Glenda were a pleasant couple who made us feel welcome, but in our eyes their dated guest house is only suitable for a short one- night stop over because the bedrooms are so small. There was hardly any space to move around in and all we had to sit on was an uncomfortable wooden chair.
Their brochure offer to attend to any special needs or requirements wasn't worth the paper it was written on. I put in a request for cranberry juice at breakfast, for health reasons, but was told to bring my own. My wife suffers from sciatica, and we asked if a mattress topper could be provided as it often helps her to sleep on a different beds. Their email reply was "we don't know what that is" and that was it. No offer to find a solution. For £75-a-night - and we stayed five nights - we expected better than that.

We do not understand the comment about the house being "dated" we know that it's nearly 100 years old but the house is re-decorated every year and the room furniture is less than 9 months old. New Dormer and Out of Eden duvets and covers are less than 2 months old. The guest was originally allocated a larger room but he decided he wanted to move to another room even though it was pointed out that it was a little smaller. The guest forgot to mention the cusions on the chairs, since their stay extra chair has been allocated in this room.
We do attend to all guests special needs but the problem in this case was that the request for cranberry juice and matress topper were not received until late in the evening prior to their arrival. During their stay no mention was made of having a different juice which we could of easily obtained and they appeared to be happy with the orange juice we provided and the special teas they requested.
The comfort of the bed was never mentioned and we receive very many positive comments from other guests on how comfortable our beds are.
If only the guest had made his feelings known during their stay we would of made every effort to help.

“Courteous host and considerate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2010

I had to cancel my booking as my husband suffered an injury.. I rang John and he was very understanding . He said he would try to rebook the room again and if so would not expect all the payment due. A few days later he mailed me that he had done this. I would never have known otherwise. His honesty impressed me. I would certainly book again with no hesitation. "Genuine and honest people" are a rarity. Thank you.

“"Simply the BEST!"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2009

My partner and myself stayed at The Manaton in early July and we were greeted by John who was extremely welcoming. He took our bags and carried them to our room and left us to settle in, After unpacking and settling in we then went to explore Lyme Regis and see what the place had to offer. John was happy to fill us in on all the best restaurants and areas of special interest....
In fact he was a ine of information..
Needless to say Lyme was more than we could have wished for and MORE....
We had a truly wonderful stay and we will certainly be returning to the Manaton again and again.. Just need to ensure we book well in advance as it is a victim of its own success as is usually full.....
I would totally 100% recommend if you are thinking of staying in Lyme Regis stay with John and Glenda everytime!!!

“Caught in a time warp”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 May 2009

We booked for two nights and were attracted to the location and fairly positive reviews. The location is central but the house is situated at the top of a steep hill ! True it is five mintues to the town- downhill. The twin room was tiny and there was no room to move around the beds let alone put the bags down. The bathroom had a half sink and a sliding door. Fringes on the lampshades, foam beds and pillows and cheap polyester cotton bedspreads puts this in the 'time warp bracket'. The view was across the road facing the neighbouring houses with thin poly-cotton curtains in a bay window. No sea views and no coastal views as described. We were shown the family room and noted this also had no sea or coastal veiws and was tiny. Although only £60 a night for two we decided to move on down the coast. The reception we received fromt he owner John to our decision was hostile and impertinent. It was out of season and there were vacancies. He charged us for the two nights and we left . No questions about why or if there was anything wrong or that they can improve on. Cannot comment on the breakfast as we did not feel welcome enough to stay to eat it (Breakfast 8.30 -9.00am)

Would recommend that anyone avoids this dated bed and breakfast establishment. The owner was friendly at first but his true colours shone through when we gave 24 hours notice to move on. No way to speak to a woman and her 74 year old mother!
