We have had off-season 2 night breaks here in most of the past 15 years. We were aware that Adnams had taken it over, so were interested in what would be different - especially after seeing some negative comments here.
The staff now all have dark Adnams branded shirts and appeared friendly focussed and efficient - and there seemed to be more staff, so no problem getting service.
We were in room 5, a nice sized and attractive room with comfy sofa, and a brass bedstead that gave us good nights sleep. This is our favourite room if we cannot get room 1. There needs to be a reading light by the sofa, as it is really too dark for extensive reading - but otherwise a fine room. (But note a (good) shower, but no bath)
The breakfasts are pretty good - not a vast array of cold items, but sufficient and good quality ingredients for the cooked options and good strong cafetiere coffee. The conservatory is a pleasant place for a leisurely breakfast. Note that the long standing process here is to indicate EVERY day what paper you want the next morning! My wife commented (to me only) that the breakfast tables needed a good scrub, and lo and behold they were all taken out later that day and cleaned up - and there was activity to clear other areas - perhaps for new carpets?
The bar areas and separate lounge areas are all attractive, and still retain the original charm of the White Horse.
We had planned our trip around Sunday Lunch at the Neptune at Old Hunstanton (really excellent), followed by the White Horse's Monday tasting menu special. On Sunday evening, only wanting a snack, we found that there is only really a fine dining menu, and no bar snack type lighter options, so we went across to the Kings Head for OK pub fare. On Monday night we tried their standard dinner menu - the tasting menu option has been discontinued. The (dated for the day) dinner menu presented many attractive sounding choices, and the presentation, taste and quality of all our dishes was very good, worthy of a Good Food Guide entry. The wine list is in transition: a selection of wines by the glass (brief descrioptions on a blackboard only) and a single sheet of bin end bottles. We had a bottle of St Amour, which was great, and, like all the bin-ends, genuinely reduced in price; and a glass of a good Soave. I hope the new owner has a good personal selection of wines, and changes regularly the by the glass options - I note that the lists at their Southwold restaurants can look at bit "samey" and static in choices. The dining area is informal, service is brisk, friendly and efficient.
At the moment the Hotel's admirable policy of a room rate structure dependent on season is retained, and works great for us. But on the food side, it looks like that they are moving exclusively to high end dining. I hope they can supplement this with some imaginative (and cheaper) options for, say, Sunday or Monday nights - so the place is not too "gentrified"!
Free Wi-Fi is available, bit patchy in your room, but better downstairs - but it is not an encrypted system, so you should be wary of doing secure transactions.
Overall another excellent stay and high class dinner. We will watch developments with interest, and particularly watch out for any wine dinner type events. But hope the prices don't creep up to other Adnams Hotels levels!
