I was one of a group of 16 of seasoned fellwalkers who had the pleasure of spending the weekend at this fine hotel.
We have 25 years' experience of staying at some of the best walkers' hotels in the Lake District and Scotland.
This was without doubt one of our most enjoyable and successful trips, made all the more so by the staff of the Scafell Hotel.
The strong points of the hotel are (a) the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff (but see below) (b) the uniformly high standard of the cuisine (c) its comfort - both the public rooms and the bedrooms (but again see below) (d) the value for money it offers (e) generally, the attention to detail that is paid (g) the (public) Riverside bar has a great ambience with roaring fires and a choice of real ales. Hardly surprisingly it is well frequented.
We were let down by: (a) a request to place our dinner order being treated unsympathetically
(b) a lack of hot water after a hard day on the fells (c) 'wet' room en suites with showers only i.e. no chance of a hot bath (d) whilst the staff were excellent the actual 'response time' to some of our requests was slower than you would expect of a hotel of this obvious quality.
All the meals we had were superb and it was clear that maximum attention to detail was being observed by the kitchen staff e.g. even the breakfast bacon and sausage had been carefuly chosen. Afternoon tea was provided (top quality) and as part of our package sunday lunch - equally as good as the excellent dinners we enoyed. The food choices on offer were great, well thought out, presentation was excellent and the standard uniformly superb.
The staff were efficient, curteous, (with one exception) and unstinting in their efforts to keep us happy. Large groups of assertive men can be difficult to deal with and must strike fear in the hearts of some hotels when they book in. The young lady from Middlesborough who the hotel pitted against us was superb and deserves maximum praise for her patient, tactful, humorous, no-nonsense approach. Mein host chatted to us regularly through the weekend and took a keen interest in where we were going and what we were doing.
On the first night, however, we were waiting for what seemed to be a disproportionate amount of time to place our dinner order. When an enquiry was raised with the reception manager the response received was 'we are a busy hotel, what do you expect, you'll just have to be patient'. This reaction was surprising, complacent, and, frankly, would prevent any hotel from getting a five star rating.
This was mirrored by a slow response at breakfast in bringing some of the orders and when additional toast, tea etc was requested.
I personally was disappointed to fnd myself in an otherwise excellent room in the annexe which had a wet room en suite without a bath. Whilst I had warm water for my shower several of our party complained about the absence of hot bath water i.e. first person o.k. second person none left.
Given the generally excellent standards the package we were offered was fantastic value for money. Would we go back? Like a shot albeit we would expect minor changes based on the comments made above.
Room Tip: If you are a walker who enjoys a hot bath then don't ask for room 27 in the Annexe.
