“Simply the Best!”

We recently returned from a nine night stay at the Hazel Bank Country House which was first class in every respect. I have been visiting my favourite place on earth (Borrowdale) for more than 50 years and have, at last, found the perfect location and accommodation to enhance my visits. From the moment of arrival until departure Sandra and Terry did everything possible to ensure that we had a memorable experience and did so with both warmth and good humour.

The location is idyllic (with views to die for), the house is beautifully furnished with ample space to relax, the gardens are extensive (with an abundance of wild animals such as red squirrels and deer roaming past the windows from time to time) and the food is lovingly prepared and presented each day (including home made bread, soups, ice creams etc.).

I have not been inclined to make a trip adviser report before but felt duty bound to do so on this occasion when our nine day visit turned out to be so memorable and urge others who love the Lake District to do likewise.

Room Tip: We stayed on the ground floor in Castle Crag room which was idyllic with wonderful views from the wi...

We have just returned from a wonderful 5 night stay with friends at Hazel Bank Country
House.Sandra and Terry are great hosts and do everything possible to make the stay
enjoyable. The hotel has a great location and is tastefully decorated and furnished
throughout.Terry is an excellent chef producing wonderful food of "fine dining" standard.
If I had a hotel and restaurant of my own, this would be it.
We wll certainly return.

“Character house serving superb food”

Hazel Bank House sits over the Stonethwaite Beck from Rosethwaite, secluded and quiet in its own park-like surrounds. Sandra and Terry greated us on arrival after the second day of our Coast-to-coast walk. Terry promptly carried our bag to our room after being told by Sandra was different from our original booking. It was very comfortable non-the-less.
Dinner was an excellent 4 course set menu that really did set the standard for the trip.
Perhaps the only slight negative is that we were told that we were unable to sit in the vacant one of two window tables because that was used by "other guests" who were staying. We were slightly amused by this as no other guests appeared during dinner and the only explanantion that we could think of was that they did not wish to reset that table for breakfast. We felt perhaps slightly less favoured and I must admit that it felt a bit Faulty Towers-ish. Still the hospitality was of a high standard and Sandra and Terry generally welcoming.
Although this was the most expensive of the guest houses we stayed in on the Coast-to-coast it was good value as it included a food offer that was of a high standard.

“What a fantastic location, wonderful accommodation and splendid food.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

If you want to experience amazing scenery in a very peaceful location with no need to use a car this is the place. It was so lovely in the evenings after walking 10-15 miles to know that we were returning to Hazel Bank to experience the most delicious home baked local and fresh cuisine. I will most definitely return and recommend to my friends. Friendly, passionate people who made us feel most welcome.

“Lovely for some?”

My wife and I stayed for one night while doing the Coast to Coast walk. There are many good things about it, e.g. location, house, and food. Unfortunately we found it unwelcoming and unfriendly – the only unfriendly place of 17 we stayed at on the walk. We wondered if the proprietors don’t like Coast to Coast walkers, though we had booked as such and arrived dry and on time. The Tripadvisor “Bravo” on its website for 55 excellent ratings seems misleading, as most of them appear to have been earned by its previous owners.

Are you sure you are referring to Hazel Bank as we cannot find any guest matching your name. We go out of our way to welcome coast to coast walkers as we both think it is a most fantastic thing to do. We even do early breakfasts for people wanting to start their walk sooner rather than later. We do delicious packed lunches for guests and fill numerous flasks free of charge to help them on their way. Regarding unfriendliness that is not at all in our nature. The Bravo we earned ourselves this year from trip advisor as we did the 5 star gold from the AA inspector and five star gold from scores on the doors.
