We booked a dinner, bed and breakfast deal through a third party as this was much cheaper than booking with the hotel direct. Bit odd as their website says "Best available rates guaranteed" as this was definitely not the case!
I have been visiting Danesfield for many years now and was married there in 2010 so I am very well aware of how the experience can fluctuate from time to time. That said, I think apart from my wedding, this has to have been one of the best visits ever. Check-in was reasonably prompt despite there only being one member of staff who was already dealing with another guest. Another staff member was available, but chose to walk off to deal with something else even though she could see me waiting. I was still waiting by the time she came back and she fetched a gentleman to check us in. If I was being picky, I think it would have been nice to have been acknowledged as a frequently returning guest of many years, but never mind!
Our room was one of the courtyard rooms on the ground floor and was a good size and was clean apart from the very old metal window frames which were mouldy. I suppose this can't be helped in such an old building, but it didn't look very nice when we pulled back the curtain. Other than that we were very pleased to see the addition of a tea tray in the room which has been a very long time coming and has previously only been available on request and at a charge. Our chilled Champagne was waiting for us as per the deal we had booked which was great.
The Spa was very busy as usual on a Saturday afternoon, but we just waited until it got quieter later on and it was lovely. There were some children in the pool when we first arrived, but they are only allowed in until 5pm after which point they left.
We had a 3 course dinner in the Orangery which was fully staffed for the first time ever. The service was absolutely brilliant and good humoured. We were a bit concerned that we might be forgotten as has happened in previous times when we have been seated at the far end of the Orangery, but not a bit of it! The food was delicious and HOT which was also a massive improvement on some previous visits. The portions are small, but very good and it makes having 3 courses possible! We had some help from a lovely member of staff when we couldn't choose a bottle of wine and that was lovely too. We retired to the Grand Hall after dinner to finish our wine, but it was absolutely freezing which was a real shame. There was a fire, but it was so small and behind such a massive fire guard that the room didn't benefit from it at all.
We were disturbed first thing in the morning by the very noisy heating system which I suppose you have to expect with such an old building, hence the "average" sleep rating. We had a lovely cooked to order English Breakfast in the lovely Adam Simmonds restaurant which you normally have to pay for, but was also part of this deal. We did have to wait a bit, but nothing outrageous and it was well worth it. We noted that although breakfast finishes at 10pm, lots of guests arrived between 9.50 and 10.00 am and were still given the best possible treatment.
We had to challenge our bill at reception as we had been charged £67 for somebody else's bar bill, but that was sorted out very quickly and highlighted by the bill that was already under our door in the morning. Express check out is now available which is a plus as reception is tiny and everybody checks out at the last minute as nobody wants to leave! I, for my part, am always one of those!
As a word of warning, do watch your speed on the road out of Marlow towards Danesfield (A4155). This is a 30 mile an hour zone and there are absolutely no signs even when you are outside of the town. Don't have your visit to Danesfield ruined by a meeting with a policeman and a radar gun!
