“Delightful change from a B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2010

Americans aren't used to self-catering short-term rentals, but the 8 of us found our 2 nights at Markree Homefarm to be a wonderful experience. We had two 2-bedroom apartments in the old stables and thoroughly enjoyed the freedom to cook for ourselves after a quick trip to the bustling Tesco in Sligo. Walking to the castle for drinks before dinner and exploring the extensive grounds made us appreciate the comfortable accommodations even more. Aimee, the charming English manager, gave me a comprehensive tour and offered excellent suggestions for golf and hiking during our stay. If there was one drawback, it is that this is a popular spot for destination weddings; our second night was marred by some pre-wedding celebrations in the shared courtyard that went on until 3am.

“Very, very pleasantly surprised!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2010

These apartments are fantastic. We booked about 8 of them recently for our wedding, as the castle could not hold all our guests. At first I was worried that they would be small and dingy and that my guests who we had to put in the apartments might be upset at not getting a room in the castle, but how wrong was I??? They are HUGE, clean, warm and comfortable. The girl who looks after the place, Amy, was so accommodating and helpful with all our requests and the changes we made on who was staying where. The beds were comfortable (I shared an apartment with my best man for the few days before my wedding) and the kitchens are fully set up with all mod-cons. Most are set up with bedrooms/bathrooms downstairs and open plan upstairs, so the are bright and fresh.

The gardens around the apartments are well maintained and there are facilities for hosting a barbecue if you want. There is also a jacuzzi and sauna in the middle of all the apartments that are open to be used at any time by the guests, free of charge. There is no internet access as of the time we were staying here, but there is internet in the castle which is only a 2 minute walk away.

This place would be perfect as a base for a family exploring the North West of Ireland. Affordable rates and all the comforts you could ask for. The Markree estate is very large and beautiful and I would recommend anyone should take a half day to explore.

Lovely setting; walks for all - short to castle, longer to road especially after castle dinner; Riding stables a short stroll down the lane;Fantastic pressure in shower; Apartment fully kitted out - even had a litre of fresh Connaught Gold milk in fridge when we arrived for that welcome cup of tea...Very friendly, warm hospitable staff.

“They really deserve the great reviews.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 April 2009

Just back from 3 nights B and B in a 3 bed apartment in Homefarm. My wife and 3 young children were treated to fabulous service and astonishing value for money. From the moment we arrived Amy our hostess was very attentive and made absolutely sure we were comfortable. We requested more logs for our open fire on day 2, and within an hour Amy arrived with a sack full that she had just chopped with her own hand. Needless to say I was pretty impressed. Also impressive were the 3 breakfasts that we were served in the castle dining room. The food was all freshly prepared and delicious, and even though they were very busy the service was seamless. They went as far as preparing french toast (not on the menu), for one of the kids who refused to eat anything else. This was a lovely touch as it made the breakfast table a happier place...(nothing worse than a grumpy 10 year old claiming that he doesn't like any of the food.)
The hotel itself is as i expected it to be. It's 3 star rating is about right. It's a little bit shabby but clean and warm and comfortable too. The big log fire in the lobby was always lit and provided a lovely welcome every time you walked in. The apartments are about 200 metres up the road and are set in a lovely courtyard with pretty gardens to the rear for the kids to enjoy and with the sauna and hot tub housed right next door. The apartment was extremely well equipped, clean, always warm, lots of hot water and with very comfortable beds and bedding. My only minor gripe might be the quality and mismatched style of the other furnishings....very much the flat pack variety, not nice to look at , not great quality , and purely functional. Overall I thought it was perfect for a relaxing break and a great location to explore the region from.

Stayed there for a friends wedding, wow the apartments are gorgeous! Great place to recover after a night of dancing...we had the hot tubs to ourselves. and then walked around the estate which was magical. I'd highly recommend the apartments!
