“Not Bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

We stayed here for a friends wedding over christmas, the hotel itself is in the middle of nowhere with absolutley nothing to do around it, but obviously thats not the hotels fault! The room was clean and good value but very cold the heat was not turned on and we stayed at xmas time! Our room was at the very front of the hotel and there was alot of noise and music coming from the bar and the main smoking area was right outside the front door and our room was just above. Did not sleep until near 4am with the noise of the people outside. The next morning we had a nice breakfast in the bar. We arrived there late that night as it was the wedding night, the doors of the hotel were locked but we pressed the buzzer and waited. We were approached by some kids from the area and they were trying to get into the hotel as well but the man on night duty dealt with them swiftly. All in all not a bad hotel pretty average worth it for the price but dont stay here thinking theres anything to do in Newport itself!

“Comfortable business stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 November 2011

I stayed for one night at this hotel. Nice atmosphere and helpful staff. Food was very good and my room was spacious and very comfortable and quiet. Very good bathroom facilities. Lovely coastline and surroundings.

“Weekend Break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

We stayed in Hotel Newport for 2 nights arriving on Friday 14th. We were due to stay a third night on the Sunday but we checked out early on Sunday morning and went and stayed in Westport for the third night.

The hotel is well maintained and our room was quite spacious and nice. The bathroom was a little old. We arrived on Friday evening to be told the restaurant was finished serving food at 7pm and that the bar had also closed for food. We decided to wait and have the dinner included in our package on Saturday night instead and we ate in the Grainne Uaile pub across the bridge.

On Saturday we rented bikes and cycled the Greenway to Mulranny which was brilliant and I would highly recommend it. We had lunch in Nevin's on the way back and it was lovely.

The restaurant in the hotel was shut again on Saturday night (it seems to be permanently closed). We didn't really fancy eating in the bar as there was a large party there, who were quite loud so we ate again in the Grainne Uaile.

The hotel is pleasing to look at but service is considerably lacking. There did not seem to be more that 1 or 2 people working in the hotel at any time over the weekend. There was never anyone on reception and if you needed anything whoever was serving in the bar had to come out and deal with reception. Our beds were not made up on the Saturday and our towels were not replaced. The milk on the table for breakfast was sour and when I asked the girl for fresh milk someone had to run to the shop to get it and she didn't even give me a fresh cup after I put sour milk in my tea. I had to take a cup from another table.

When we ask to check out early the person on receiption didn't even query why we were leaving a day early.

I would highly recommend cycling the greenway but I'd recommend staying in Westport and driving to newport to hire bikes.

We were very much looking forward to our weekend in Newport however we were left feeling a little bit disappointed by the experience.

“Good value for money”

Very good first impression. Rooms are very tidy and well maintained. We didnt expect that much from a 3star hotel. Well forth the money!

“Big Room - Informal Atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

Myself and my wife stayed for 2 nights and we would recommend it if you want to stay somewhere quieter, easier to park and better value than Westport, but within easy striking distance of its amenities.

Newport is a charming little town, though the choice of eating entertainment a little limited. We ate at the hotel on the first night as we had been travelling all day down the west coast of Mayo from Enniskillen, skirting the Ballycroy National Park and the other eating places in Newport did not have anything vegetarian for my wife. We thought the hotel's Bistro was expensive until we looked for somewhere to eat in Westport the following day. We then realised that we had got a bargain the night before and what is more the standard of cooking and presentation was also excellent; breakfast was also good. The Bistro/Bar attracted a few locals in, but was not exactly heaving when we stayed, even when the live entertainment was on (though this started a bit late for us - around 10.00pm); fortunately is did not disturb us, even though our room was directly above.

Our room was very roomy, though a little tired in a quaint sort of way. The service was mixed: a bit laid back (in a small town Ireland sort of way) but friendly enough.

Newport is a good place from which to visit Connemara and the lesser visited, but equally scenic West Mayo coastline. If this is what you're after, give Hotel Newport a try !
