“Tiny rooms though the setting on the lake is lovely”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

The rooms were tiny and disappointing, though the setting made up for this somewhat, saw one of the most beautiful sunsets there on the veranda overlooking the lake. The hotel is in a very nice setting and the common area was pleasant. The staff was lovely and very very kind and friendly and the food was good, this helped compensate for the rooms and I enjoyed my time there.

“Not too bad, but tiny rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 June 2011

During an organized bus tour through Iceland, I stayed at this hotel for one night.

This was probably the smallest room I have ever stayed in. As a solo traveller I got a single room, and the room was about the size of twice the (single) bed, meaning half the room was taken up by the bed. The rest had a desk, a table for the suitcase, a wardrobe and a bed table. Needless to say, the room remaining for the guest was miniminal. With the suitcase on its table, I had a to squeeze between the wall and the suitcase in order to exit the room or use the bath room. Cleanliness was okay, but not outstanding. Some towels had stains, and the bar holding the shower head was also quite badly stained, although in both cases I'd say these were stains which cannot be easily removed. Also, Wifi was only available in the lobby, not in the rooms. And it was very slow to use.

On the positive side, the food in the restaurant was excellent, everybody in our group enjoyed it. The service was very friendly and helpful. The room was quiet (once they turned down the music in the bar, which was around 11 pm), the bed comfortable and I slept well here.

It's an okay hotel to stay for a night or two, but if I stayed in Myvatn again, I'd first look for another hotel.

“Dirty and Claustrophobic”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2010

This appeared to be the worst stay for us on our trip around Iceland. We spent there 2 nights July 30 and 31.

Our room was supposed to be for 2 people. Apart from having 2 tight beds and 2 sets of towels in tiny bathroom nothing hinted much that room wass designated for 2 people. In fact it was too tight for even 1 person. Thank God we had a car so we could take what we needed from our bags and keep the bags in the car, because the room didn't have space for even 1 standard suitcase.

The other problem was the dirt. It's worth mentioning that the whole hotel smells by sulfur, just like the hot water in all over Iceland, expect as soon as you tighten the tab in other places the smell disappears, while here it stays in room all day/night long. If to add that the room floor has the wall-to-wall carpet such filthy and stinky that it absorbs and distributes all the smell at all time... you get the picture.

The staff is average. Not too friendly, not too caring, they just do the job.

The breakfast was the only plus. It had all one would need to start the morning well.

Overall, try to look for another place to stay in that area if you can afford it. There is one of the most picturesque parts of Iceland, so it's worth not to spoil the experience by this rat hole Gigur.

“Outstanding service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2009

The front desk clerk went out of her way to help us print, scan and send an important document that we needed to get out. We really appreciated it, as services can be difficult to get in Iceland. The dinner was expensive, but good in the hotel´s restaurant. The location is wonderful, and the room was clean and well kept.

We have definitely enjoyed our stay here and would recommend Hotel Gigur to anyone traveling in the Myvatn area of Iceland.

“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2008

The best thing of this hotel is that is located just close to the pseudocraters of Myvatn Lake. The dinner room has a great views over the whole lake. The people in reception is very friendly.
The problem is that the price is too high comparing with the quality of the room.
It was possible to see "Northern Lights" from the hotel.
