This chateau, which was recommended to us by our son (who had stayed for a few nights some years earlier), was rather further south than we originally intended to travel in a day from the London area, but proved to be very well worth the journey. Veronique was very welcoming and showed us around the property and the beautiful grounds, including the swimming pool built into the rock face. This unusual chateau, built on the side of the cliff overlooking the village of Nazelles Negron, and together with the lovely gardens, enjoys far-reaching views to the south, including a glimpse of the chateau at Amboise over the River Loire.
We stayed in our own "Wendy House", being the Pavillon Marie-Louise, in the rear courtyard. It was very private and quiet and simply furnished. The wet room shower, built into the cliff, was very interesting, particularly as it included a clear-glazed circular window overlooking the courtyard and gardens which seemed to offer little privacy at first, but which steamed up immediately the shower was operated !
Veronique had kindly booked us into the Auberge de Launay restarant near Limeray, some 10 minutes away, where we thoroughly enjoyed a most excellent meal at a very modest price.
Breakfast, taken in a large, impressive dining room, was very good, especially trying out some of the local honey on offer (and we bought some jars for use at home) and with excellent coffee.
Several other guests were using the chateau as a base for touring the Loire valley and we envied them as we had to move on after one night.
