“Astonishing Polo Escape”

It is difficult to add to the review posted by ALT1530, Houstan, Texas.

My short stay at El Metejon, just ahead of the season, has been exceptional. Alicia and Diego took such great care of me from the moment I arrived at my very own private Club House. The absence of other guests only highlighted their hospitality. Diego was kind enough to take me to watch the opening match at the 40 Goal Tortugas Open, the first in the Triple Crown series. What an exceptional afternoon away from the field, but so close to it.

Mercedes provided large amounts of excellent food: breakfast; lunch; dinner; and the snacks to fill the gaps in between.

Paula Martinez provided personal instruction every day and looked after me every afternoon in Practice: I owe her such a huge thank you for taking the time and having the patients to shape my play, her eye for the smallest detail and her passion to see me improve were just incredible. Of course, access to Diego excellent ponies for lessons and practice every day made the task of hitting the ball that much easier.

The only question that remains is when can I return ……

“Absolutely the Best Polo Vacation Ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2011

I love this place! My first visit to El Metejon was 4 years ago upon the advice of a friend knowledgeable about the sport of polo. I had also seen El Metejon featured in a book publish by National Geographic titled Journey of a Lifetime: 500 of the World’s Greatest Trips. I had just started playing polo and was a true novice. The trip was a fantastically positive experience and I have return to El Metejon with my family once or twice a year since. With each visit my polo skills improve more in one week than in an entire season at home.

El Metejon is located 15 minutes from Ezeiza International Airport. The estancia is in the heart of the Argentine polo community and is within a short distance of La Martina, and La Dolfina. El Metejon is located in the compania (rural country) but only a short 45 minute drive to Buenos Aires, providing the best of both worlds.

Each time we have travelled to El Metejon, we have been met at the airport by the proprietor, Diego, and transported back to the estancia. We arrive on a morning flight and once back at El Metejon we fall immediately into the "Polo Lifestyle" of a true Argentine estancia. The schedule is very simple. We with have a light breakfast and immediately go out onto the practice field for polo instructions. The lessons are given by knowledgeable professionals, including Paola Martinez (3 goals), on a one-to-one basis. There are a huge number of horses to choose from depending on your riding abilities and preference. All of the horses are well taken care and well trained. The staff is well versed at matching the horse with the guest’s abilities to make this an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone.

After lunch and a siesta, there is the afternoon practice game, which consists of 4 chukkas. Each team is composed of 2 to 3 professionals in addition to one or two guests. The level of play is tailored to the abilities of the guests. The teams are typically 4 to 8 goal level in handicap depending on who is playing. I have had the opportunity to play with excellent players including David Sterling ( who is a resident of El Metejon and is 9 goals), Santiago Chavanne (8 goals), Juan Chavanne (6 goals ), Federico Teves (6 goals), Jorge Tassara (5 goals), and Paola Martinez (3 goal) to name a few. The pace of the practice is well controlled and everyone participates. Beginners are made to feel comfortable at all times.

El Metejon is great place for a family vacation. I have 3 sons who now play polo. As pre-teens and teenagers Diego arranged special practice chukkas including argentine children their own ages demonstrating how accommodating he can be. They will soon be better players than I. On our last visit, I had the opportunity to play in a 12 goal tournament held at El Metejon with my sons-truly a wonderful experience for a father. My spouse loves the tranquility of El Metejon, but alas, has not embraced the sport of polo. For her, there is plenty to do and she looks forward to exploring the surround towns and frequent trips to Buenos Aires for shopping, theater, and restaurants. I am told that there are other recreational activates available, such as golf and fishing, but I have never found the time to look into it.

Diego and Alicia are the consummate hosts and always make you feel welcome. They pay attention to even the smallest details and they do everything to ensure that your stay will be perfect. The staff is friendly and hospitable. The meals are wonderful, thanks to Alicia’s daily shopping trips to the local markets and Mercedes' talents in the kitchen. Do not expect to lose any weight during your stay, even with all of the polo you will play.

The facility is beautiful. Diego and Alicia take care of El Metejon as one would take care of their own home. There are 3 polo fields which are of excellent quality and well taken care of. The club house is spacious, well designed, and tastefully decorated. The guest rooms are large, private, and very comfortable. There is a large commons area for meals and relaxing with your fellow polo enthusiasts. At El Metejon I have had the pleasure of meeting wonderful people from the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

El Metejon is definitely worth it. It is a great value considering the wonderful accommodations and great polo. It is definitely a step above the other polo estancias which I have seen-more stylish than rustic. The price is a fraction of what it would cost for the polo alone in the States. For these many reason, I plan on returning to El Metejon whenever possible.

“excellent hospitality with perfect polo teaching and playing”

I truly and highly recommend a stay at El Metejon for two reasons: polo and estancia. Best of the best.

The estancia is beautifull and has excellent service. It is easily reachable from Buenos Aires by car and public transport (from Eizisa internat. airport 15min). The hospitality is excellent with the service: you feel like coming home. The interior design is warm and has light colours, very comfortable and chic. The food is delicious - if you have a special request they will make it happen, if you are a vegetarian or have alergics, no problem at all.

If it comes to polo, this is the place to be! Why: because you have excellent trainers and horses that are based on your level of playing. If you are a beginner you get a slow, easy to handle horse. If you feel your are a decent amateur with a 3+hdcp, then there are horses for your skills available as well!!! This happens for the morning session of stick & ball, but more important for the "practica", i.e. a game of 4 chukkars every afternoon. At the practica sessions there are joining professional polo players with hdcp 5 or 6 (!). If you are a beginner then there will be beginners practicas arranged as well. If you need any polo equipment then the team will help you to arrange it.

I will always come back and enjoy the beautiful landscape, hospitality and most of all to play polo!

“Absolutely Amazing, Improved my polo more than I ever thought possible!”

I've been having the time of my life from the moment I touched down at Ezeiza Airport (Buenos Aires). And that after a 16 hour flight! As I walked through customs I saw the very friendly owner of El Metejon waiting for me on the other side of the glass. They had organized a practice tournament for me in the morning and after a short drive to get to the farm I could immediately jump on a horse and play with their professionals/local players and 1 other guest. They normally have a policy that on each team there will only be max 2 guests so the flow of the game is always fantastic. After that I was welcomed by the lovely club house staff who welcomed me with cold beverages and showed me around. The Suites are located around the club house and they are very spacious. The beds are very comfortable and there's a a game room with a pool table, a nice big swimming pool and free wifi in all the areas.

The rest of the stay just continued to be so lovely. Everyday there's a good breakfast (not an English style one as you get to play polo shortly after it, but still very nice with lots of fruits etc), and a delicious 3 course lunch and dinner. The atmosphere is very nice and friendly, the owner and his wife join the guests for the meals and the staff is very helpful. If you want to go to the city you they will help you with arranging transport and sort out all the details. They helped me to buy a very nice pair of custom made boots straight from the factory and some nice zapalla mallets.

And every day there is fantastic polo, I really improved a lot in the week that I was staying here.
The horses were top class (some of the horses they breed there (7 already!!) have gone on to play in the Argentine Open), the fields are very very nice and well maintained, and the teaching pro's are absolutely brilliant. Their in house-pro is Paola, the number one female player from Argentina, and she really is a great teacher with very good English (for an Argentinian ;))

Staying at El Metejon is definitely worth it. It is a bit more expensive than some of the cheap polo estancias around, but the difference in the level of the horses, fields and the professionals easily makes up for it.

“Stunning polo estancia run by incredibly friendly people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 April 2008

We originally stayed at El Metejon in December last year, having seen nothing of the place other than its (very professional) website, so were a little apprehensive going in. We both play polo, though not to a very high standard, and wanted somewhere nice to stay for a week that would serve both as a place to relax and a place to hone our polo skills. Put simply; we loved it so much, we arranged a special trip to return just four months later!

El Metejon is conveniently located less than an hour from Buenos Aires, and a mere 15min from Ezeiza airport. The estancia is close to La Martina and La Dolfina, as well If you ask to be picked up by car, you may get a rather shabby welcome vehicle, but don't let that serve as an indication of what's to come.

First: the POLO... El Metejon is a purpose-built gated polo community, though few houses have been developed yet, so the place has a lovely country feel to it. There are three fields which are maintained to a very high standard, and there are around 100 horses to choose from, so you will certainly find something to your liking. Mornings usually involve a stick-and-ball session, which can be solo or with the expert tuition of Paola Martinez, their resident two-goal instructor. Paola is absolutely fantastic, and wonderfully patient, as well. Late afternoons will include practice chukkas (usually four chukkas), which will be tailored to your level of expertise. You'll get the full complement of horses at your disposal, and you'll have no more than two "guests" on each team to keep the flow going. We played practice games with 5-goal resident pro Jorge Tassara, 2-goal Paola Martinez, and several excellent 0-2 goal players from the area. Diego and Alicia, the owners of El Metejon, are very well connected, as their family includes Santiago Chavanne (8 goals) and Maria Chavanne (1 goal), and Diego is the godfather of none other than Adolfo Cambiaso. As a result, they can tailor higher goal practice sessions at relatively short notice (not that we needed it!) During our stay, we encountered both absolute beginners to people who had played for 15 years. All of whom were kept happy.

The clubhouse has, I believe, 12 rooms. An outstanding feature of the clubhouse and the bedrooms is they style of the place, the result of Alicia's personal taste and cool Danish genes, no doubt. The clubhouse is very tastefully appointed, and the rooms are simply decked in white linen and cotton with stone floors. Meals are excellently prepared by Mercedes and Lucia, and they had absolutely no problems dealing with our vegetarianism (a sin in Argentina!) There's even tea and refreshments after stick-and-balling, and tea after practice chukkas. You'll leave the resort needing to lose weight, despite your hours on the horse.

There is massage available at the estancia, as well, at reasonable cost (around $40 for an hour at time of writing), though be prepared, as the masseuse is very much a sports masseuse, so the pressure is VERY strong. Excellent for post-polo sessions, but I wouldn't say ideal for someone looking for a soothing, relaxing massage.

I cannot praise the friendliness and kindness of the staff and owners enough, from the incredible hospitality of Diego and Alicia (nothing is a problem for them), to the grooms, to the warmth and friendliness of Paola, to the people in the clubhouse. Really, it's what made the place so special for us, and it's why we'll never go anywhere else.

Some downsides? The estancia is off the highway, which is convenient for travel, but you may hear some traffic noise if practicing on field three or you are downwind from the highway (you cannot hear anything from inside the clubhouse, which is further away). Once in a while you will hear a train rattle in the distance, but nothing to write home about. Showers in the room could use some water pressure (especially when you stink of horse!), though the rooms have bathtubs as well.

We have spoken to many people who have gone to estancias in and around Pilar, etc, and the overriding feel we get is that El Metejon is just that one step above away from the field... the rooms are more stylish, the environment a tad more professional. If you want to herd cattle in your downtime and relax with gauchos, then this isn't the place to visit. I'd label El Metejon as a stylish estancia where your primary focus is the polo. We took a risk going here "sight unseen," and with no reviews on the place, but the risk paid off. A truly unforgettable experience.

...we'll be going back again at the end of this year for the Open at Palermo.
