“Great value and pleasantly comfortable stay...fantastic water pressure from the shower”
My boyfriend and I stayed here for a week in May and were very pleased with this place. I highly recommend the loft room if you can get it. There isn't much going on in the immediate neighborhood, but we wanted to spend a lot of time in San Telmo, so the location was great since it was just a short walk to all the places we wanted to hang out.
My boyfriend lived in Buenos Aires for a couple of years, so since he was my official tour guide for my first visit to the city, my contribution to the trip was to find a place to stay. After all of the reviews I read, I decided on this place. Unlike some places you see, the photos from their website are accurate. The building is adorable and the layout is great with the open atrium. We spent a lot of time sitting at the small tables outside our room just relaxing between adventures in the city.
As for location, my BF mentioned that years ago that neighborhood would have been off-limits in terms of safety, but it seems a lot has changed in the past 7 years or so. Since there aren't many businesses or much activity in the couple of blocks surrounding the hotel, you might feel a little nervous about walking around at night. We took a lot of cabs, but in actuality, I don't think we had anything to worry about at all.
The room was very nice and spacious. The bed was very comfortable and the water pressure in the shower was fantastic! It actually made me sad to go back home to our less than stellar water pressure.
Having the free wi-fi was a huge plus! Especially since we lost an ATM card on our first day and had to make lots of Skype calls and bank transfers from the laptop we brought to make sure we'd have cash available for the trip.
The place is very quiet...almost too quiet. The walls are thin, so you hear any activity outside of your room. If you are returning to the room late at night, you have to be really careful to keep the noise down so that you don't disturb anyone. We were a little too chatty when we got back to the room after our first late night out and I felt bad, because I'm pretty sure we disturbed someone else's sleep.
Breakfast in the morning was lovely, even though we missed it most days because we just got up too late. The staff is nice enough. They did make fun of my Spanish, but to be fair, what little Spanish I know is atrocious. Thank goodness I was traveling with my own personal translator. There is no need though, since the whole staff speaks English.
One reviewer mentioned that she almost felt like their presence was an intrusion for the staff, and I have to admit that I got the same kind of vibe. I'm not sure that my boyfriend felt the same way since he was much more chatty with everybody.
Overall, I was very happy with this selection. I would probably stay here again, and might even feel more comfortable with the staff on a second trip. It's a great value and almost feels like your own personal secret hideaway.
P.S. If you're visiting Buenos Aires, check out Tierra Santa (weird and unbelievable) and go for drinks at the Gibraltar, Bangalore and La Puerta Roja (full disclosure: this is a plug for our friends' bars)
