“Basic HIE”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2012

My husband and I traveled to Tucson to visit our son April 20-23. We really only needed someplace to stay for the evening as most of our time was spent with our son. Check in was quick and easy; we received the highest floor, room away from the elevator per our request. The lobby is in the midst of being remodeled but we had no problems as no work was ongoing over the weekend.

The room was clean and, while recently updated, the work was poorly done. While the updates don't impact the comfort or cleanliness of the room, it was sloppy and not done to the standards I would expect of most hotel chains and certainly NOT I would accept in my own home. (Sloppy painting, floor grout cracking and coming out, etc.) It's a shame that the shabby work was accepted by the owner. This gives me pause as to what other lower standards would be acceptable for this property.

A pet peeve of mine is placing all the bath linens on a shelf over the toilet. Sadly this is the case in the bathroom here; I always immediately move the towels to the vanity area after I wipe it down with (always carry them) Lysol wipes. There was nothing wrong with the room but it was nothing special either. As an earlier review said - it's the basic, standard, Holiday Inn Express.

The breakfast was typical; nothing special but the usual HIE breakfast spread. The breakfast area was a decent size but, upon exiting the elevator on the first floor, the air did not seem to be working. We ended up taking breakfast to our room as it was uncomfortable even just sitting in the breakfast room.

Parking was easy and there was plenty to be found. The area is safe and has a number of restaurants, some basic shops, and even a theatre close by. Easy access to I-10. We had two double beds at the rate of $114 per night, plus tax. While we will consider staying here again, there is nothing that would bring us back so we will look at other hotels for our next stay.

One note: while the train could be heard, we live in a town that has numerous trains traveling through day and night so it was not an issue for us. However, if you are accustomed to a quiet night's sleep, you may want to look elsewhere or use a good pair of earplugs.

Room Tip: Higher floors are always quieter.

“Good average hotel of this type”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 May 2012

Well it's a Holiday Inn Express and you get what you expect, that isn't negative just a statement of fact. It does what the chain does and does it satisfactorily. Currently there is some renovation ongoing, and that should make it feel better once complete. The room was nice and clean and the hotel is far enough from the interstate to be quiet. Breakfast was good and the staff fairly friendly.

The swimming pool is laughably small, more of a big bath than a pool. This obviously is a tick box type affair, "We must have a pool and here it is!" I don't need a big pool, I mainly splash around with the kids but this was ridiculous. It would be far better to not have a pool and not raise peoples expectations.

If not for the pool and renovations I would have given this 4/5.

“Very nice -- we'll stay here again.”

We spent five nights here in February 2012. The room was spacious and clean (we had a room that was recently renovated - I don't know how the older rooms are). The bed was extremely comfortable. The breakfast was nice, with a lot of choices. The staff was friendly and helpful. We did hear the train whistle that everyone here has mentioned, but it didn't wake me up at night, and while it woke my husband on some nights, he said he went right back to sleep. We liked the fact that we could walk from the hotel to a little shopping center across the road; the area is pedestrian-friendly, with sidewalks and traffic lights. We have relatives who live nearby, and I'll be happy to stay here again. I gave it five stars not because it's a deluxe hotel like a Ritz Carlton, but because it's a very nice hotel in its class.

Room Tip: They were still doing renovations when we were there. I had asked in advance in we could have a reno...

“Understaffed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

When we went to check in, we were told our reservation had been canceled. (They had mistakenly canceled our room instead of that of a relative.) Our reservation was then reinstated and they upgraded us to a suite, but we had to wait for the room to be cleaned. That night after we were asleep, we received a call from the front desk asking for our last name and wanting to know why we were in that particular room. They should have had that information. The next day we returned to the room at 3 p.m., and the room had not been cleaned. We left for two hours and the room was still not cleaned when we returned. I called the front desk and someone was sent to clean the room, but she first had to clean the room next to ours. She told us she was the only one working. Probably will not plan to stay there again.

“Train whistles!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

Our room (234) did not have an adequate heating unit. It ran briefly and turned off before it
Would heat the room. Also this property is near some train tracks and the train whistles came through our window which did not close completely. Very loud. I recommend wearing earplugs if you stay here.
