“From Soap Factory to Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2011

A former soap factory, the Savon Hotel has been converted into a comfortable hotel located just off of the local produce market in Antakya. The rooms are large, air-conditioned and with a modern bathroom. Free wi-fi is available in your room. Our room overlooked the large courtyard which also included an outdoor restaurant. As we were here during Ramadan, all was quiet but we were told that ordinarily courtyard rooms are noisy as weddings are typically held here.

Room Tip: Ask for an "inside" room if you want a quiet night's sleep unless it is during Ramadam...

“Ridiculously loud music and overpriced, but otherwise ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

Maybe it's a normal thing for the Turks, but the middle of the night disco music was insane and we were there for a wedding. We had to wake up early the next morning for a flight so were hoping for a few hours of sleep that was just impossible. Also, the first room we were in had a shower that was stupidly small, you wouldn't have been able to raise your arms without bumping into the walls. So we moved to a larger room that was better. Also, no one mentions that because of the historical aspect of it being built in an old soap factory there are NO WINDOWS. There are sunlights in some of the rooms, but it is really dark and prison-like and the lighting was odd. Otherwise the beds and bathrooms and other amenities were ok, pretty standard. But for being in the middle of nowhere we found their rates to be high.

“A really interesting hotel, loved it”

My wife and I stayed in this hotel a couple of years back. Our friends got married there and held their reception at the hotel.

The staff and facilities were fine, as was the room. A swimming pool would have been nice but there just isn't the area in which to locate a pool - not the hotel's fault.

Meals were superb. Breakfast, al fresco, was bliss - and the variety of food on offer was something else.

If we go back out that way I will looking to stay a night or two at this hotel once again.

Well recommended.

It's location is pretty good too - off the main road, in the old quarter - walking distance to the market and to the river.

I've got some photos - I'll see if I can upload to this review later.

Room Tip: Staff speak VG English, just ask in advance...

“Stylish old soap factory”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2011

The Savon hotel was an old soap factory that had been carefully renovated about 10 years ago. The ground floor had lovely large warehouse style windows and wide marble corridors. The bedrooms were a good size and nicely decorated with big windows overlooking the main road (be careful as some only have skylights). The bathroom only had a shower and was rather small but it had a hairdryer & small sink surround. My room smelt slightly of smoke so it could be that the air conditioning system feeds through from smoking rooms? There was free wifi in the hotel & rooms and the TV had some English channels. The breakfast had the usual items on offer; delicious flat Turkish breads, cheeses, fresh vegetables, fruit, yoghurts and one could order a hot breakfast too.

“Do not book here. One of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2010

Warning! Nowhere on this hotel's website (though I use the term 'hotel' loosely) do they warn you that every Saturday night the main courtyard becomes a nightclub. We awoke, disorientated, at midnight to a thumping drum-and-bass beat. When we called reception to find out what was going on, the reception clerk was thoroughly unhelpful. Thankfully we spoke Turkish (none of the staff speak good English) so we were able to remonstrate with the clerk, but he was either unwilling or unable to help us. Despite assuring us that the music would stop at 01.30am, it continued until 02.00am. The whole situation was made much worse by our particular situation (we were using the hotel as an overnight stop before heading off for a 07.00am flight) but many other guests complained vociferously as well.

I imagine that - if one were able to sleep - this hotel would be acceptable. The bed was comfy, the room large and the restaurant adequate, with a good selection of Turkish and 'international' foods. Unfortunately, the bathroom was awful - old, with a leaky loo and a shower that flooded the floor. And they charged us for internet access as we were leaving - conveniently not telling us that they charged when we asked for the password.
