“Comfortable guest house / villa set amidst orange gardens”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2010

We stayed two nights from 2 to 4 September 2010. The villa was a bit hard to find as it is off the main roads hidden in orange plantations, but it was well worth the little detour. The rooms (there are only a few of them) are reasonably sized, comfortable with private bath and aircon, and well appointed. A library, a billard room, a saloon with open chimney, a dining room for the cool season, and a large garden and swimming pool are all available for the guests, as well as ample parking .

We had booked half board, and an excellent dinner was served in the garden by the nearby flowing little river in a perfectly romantic setting. The owners (a french couple) care themselves for the guests and their distinct taste can be found everywhere in the villa, as well as in the fexcellent food (Turkish with a strong french touch) and the wine list.

The forte of the property is of course the entirely quiet and romantic setting, removed from mass tourism.

We would really liked to have stayed longer, and definitely plan doing so in the future. We would like to express our thanks to M. Gerard and his charming wife for their hospitality and congratulate them to this property.

Last not least, the price (in high season) was very reasonable (€ 130 for two persons halfboard per night).

“Memorable food”

I had stayed at L'Orangeraie for a few days in October 2009. It is such a special place that I came again this May with with my partner. We had booked for a week, but enjoyed L'Orangeraie and the surrounding area so much that we stayed on for an extra 2 days. Nearby Finike is a delightful small town almost untouched by mass tourism, and there is much to do and see in the nearby area.

Gerard and Mireille are wonderful hosts. Reading other reviews it is clear that other people enjoyed L'Orangeraie as much as us, and I fully endorse all the praise given.

The highlight of our stay was the meals. Breakfast in the garden each morning: fresh orange juice, fresh breads, cheeses, home made jams, home made cake, fresh seasonal fruit, etc. and good coffee (rare in Turkey). Dinner in a candle lit flowery bower by the river: 4 courses created using fresh seasonal ingredients, with wonderful and imaginative use of vegetables. This is real cooking with many traditional Turkish dishes that require a lot of preparation, and long slow cooking. Nothing was repeated during our 9 day stay. We were somewhat daunted at first by the idea of a 4 course dinner each night, but the meals were so well balanced that we never felt we had eaten too much. All this was complemented by excellent wines from an individual producer in Capadocia - personally selected by Gerard, and most reasonably priced by Turkish standards.

I find it hard to believe the reviewer who complained about the small quantities of food at L'Orangeraie. Was he staying at the same hotel? Gerard was almost most solicitious and discussed the evening menu with us a day in advance. Second helpings were offered, and I am sure that double helpings would be provided if one did but ask!

“A very special hotel - a hidden gem!”

We really enjoyed our stay. Gerard and Mireille are perfect hosts and their small hotel is beautiful. I do not understand the reviews re the food. We were only there for 3 nights and enjoyed 3 lovely breakfasts by the fantastic pool which ıncluded cheese, olives fruit, different breads and fantastic home made jams - I would challenge anyone to be able to eat ıt all!

Dinners were by the stream in a very romantic setting and were 4 lovely courses, excellent food, tasty and home cooked. We never normally eat at a hotel but the food and the setting were top!

The hotel is ın a quiet spot with stunningly beautiful grounds and is well placed for great days out if you have a car. Gerard is great at arranging routes and providing tips on interesting places to have lunch. There are lots of great little touches too, such as bottles of mineral water when you are going out for the day and for your room.

The bedroom was beautifully appointed and it was nice not having a tv for a change, I wish I had brought my ipod player though as the room is very quiet. The bed was really comfortable with quality sheets etc, and I slept like a log! We had had a balcony overlookıng the pool with lovely vıews - really relaxing. The wc took a little getting used to as it was the Greek system with paper in the bin - soon got used to it though.

We hope to return some day as this is really a very special place.

“An experience to awaken all of the senses”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2010

As we pulled into this lovely Villa Portakal in the middle of orange groves, we knew we were in for a special stay. Even the color of the villa and our room evoked citrus. The Ottoman decor was exquisite with sumptuous fabrics, colorful buttoned saddles and prints collected from France and Belgium adorning the walls. An endless assortment of upscale magazines to envoke learning more of this wonderful culture. The grounds were ablaze with the color of purple bouganviella and red pomegranate leaves along with an herb garden that supplied the gourmet meals. Both breakfast and the 3 course French/Turkish meals were served al fresco which heightened the senses more. These meals were, undoubtedly, the highlight of our stay. While Mireille and Nevrus labored in the kitchen, Gerard served and offered exquisite wine pairings of special vintages from the area of Cappadocia. Mireille took pride in her use of the finest olive oils from near Izmir. Nevrus even created an eggplant dish that my husband ate as a child in Lebanon, Egypt and Kuwait so this TRULY speaks highly of the refinement of these meals for authenticity.
As we bid a sad farewell, Gerard put us in the capable hands of a private captain who met us in the harbor of Kekova.
L'Orangerie will always have a special place in our hearts.
This is truly a place NOT to be missed!

“AVOID”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2010

We came here to enjoy a relaxing few days, but it turned into a dieting boot camp. Food was scarce and if you didn't happen to like the single dish that was on offer, you got nothing. There weren't any other places to eat nearby at night so this meant you went to bed even more hungry than if you liked the scanty portions. Generally, the food was good, but there was so little of it, it was hard to tell.
The breakfast was also scarce, though tasty. Seconds were given grundgingly and in even smaller portions than the original. The bread is re-used from the previous nights dinner.
Given that food is so fresh, cheap and freely available in Turkey, the attitude here was shocking. Customer service was not on the agenda.
Nice place, but bring your own food.
