We chose the Kaibab Lodge because the Grand Canyon Lodge was booked and this was our only alternative on the North Rim. We would have been better off sleeping in the car (which we eventually did). There was no air conditioning in our room and the windows had been nailed shut. It was extremely stuffy. There were bugs everywhere both alive and dead. Our building had been divided into four separate rooms. The material used to divide the rooms may as well have been a thin sheet of plastic. We could hear EVERYTHING that happend in our neighbor's room. We were treated to the sounds of human mating activity coming from the bed on the opposite side of the "wall". Speaking of the beds, our was not great. Due to the combination of all of these factors, we did not sleep at all. About 2:30 in the morning I decided to get up and try to sleep in the car. My wife joined me about 3 o'clock and we decided to start our day at the Grand Canyon very early. We left at 4:30.
We stayed at the Kaibab Lodge in July of 2008 and I am just now getting around to writing this review because we were having a conversation with some family members about the worst nights of our lives. For both my wife and I, our experience at the Kaibab Lodge ranks as the worst night of our lives. That includes a night spent in the emergency room with our 20 month old son who had just broken his femur. It includes a night spent on the floor of an airport. It includes a handful of other nights that are also in the running for "Worst Night", but none of them beat our night at the Kaibab Lodge. Be warned. From our experience, you'd be better off in your car.
To add insult to injury, when we returned from our trip and wrote the Kaibab Lodge to inform them about our experience, we received no response whatsoever.
