“Horrible. We got up in the middle of the night to sleep in the car.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

We chose the Kaibab Lodge because the Grand Canyon Lodge was booked and this was our only alternative on the North Rim. We would have been better off sleeping in the car (which we eventually did). There was no air conditioning in our room and the windows had been nailed shut. It was extremely stuffy. There were bugs everywhere both alive and dead. Our building had been divided into four separate rooms. The material used to divide the rooms may as well have been a thin sheet of plastic. We could hear EVERYTHING that happend in our neighbor's room. We were treated to the sounds of human mating activity coming from the bed on the opposite side of the "wall". Speaking of the beds, our was not great. Due to the combination of all of these factors, we did not sleep at all. About 2:30 in the morning I decided to get up and try to sleep in the car. My wife joined me about 3 o'clock and we decided to start our day at the Grand Canyon very early. We left at 4:30.
We stayed at the Kaibab Lodge in July of 2008 and I am just now getting around to writing this review because we were having a conversation with some family members about the worst nights of our lives. For both my wife and I, our experience at the Kaibab Lodge ranks as the worst night of our lives. That includes a night spent in the emergency room with our 20 month old son who had just broken his femur. It includes a night spent on the floor of an airport. It includes a handful of other nights that are also in the running for "Worst Night", but none of them beat our night at the Kaibab Lodge. Be warned. From our experience, you'd be better off in your car.
To add insult to injury, when we returned from our trip and wrote the Kaibab Lodge to inform them about our experience, we received no response whatsoever.

“Friendly staff, clean rooms, good location for North Rim”

We managed to get a night here on the off chance, when we decided to spend longer at the North Rim. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the restaurant provided good food at a reasonable price, the rooms were warm and clean, and the beds incredibly comfy.

Our room was one of four in a cabin to the back of the main building, which was a little difficult to find in the dark!

We've stayed in similar accommodation in Oregon and Yellowstone, and knew what to expect - no TV or entertainment, just in the thick of the wilderness. Disappointed to see so much negative feedback about this place - you don't go to places like this to spend your free time watching TV. If in doubt, take a good book, a pack of cards (think they sell these in the shop-come-bar), or someone to talk to... and enjoy the daylight hours on the North Rim. We would definitely recommend this place as somewhere to get away from it all.

“Overpriced - no amenities - definitely not worth the money!”

We knew going in, the being the closest open lodge to the north rim, it would be pricey, but we were sorely disappointed. The staff was insulted that I even asked about a television in the room. It was cold and most travelers prefer to relax in their room and have the ability to check weather reports, etc. There was no phone, not even the shampoos one expects to find in comparable priced accomodations. We were told we had a great view of the meadow & MAY see a deer. The rooms were clean, but the heater clanged so loudly all night, we didn't get much rest. Were sorry we didn't stay at Jacob Lake & just drove the 20 extra miles the next morning!

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!

“Location, Location, Location - Rustic But Clean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

This hotel was the closest option to the North Rim when we were there - the Grand Canyon Lodge had already closed for the season. We were in the handicapped room and it was large and clean. There was one double bed and one twin bed in the room and both were adequate. There was television and sporadic Internet access in the lodge only - none in the rooms. The lodge is homey with one side being a restaurant and the other side with plenty of tables and chairs near a television, a big couch in front of a fireplace, and a small gift shop area. The restaurant was pretty good. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not...it's a remote and rustic lodge that provides good food, a warm and clean place to sleep, and a chance to experience the North Rim as it really is! We were happy to have been there!

“Great location to the North Rim.”

We stopped here while visiting the North Rim due to the location of the hotel. Since it is off season, they didn't have a lot of rooms available so they put us in the handicapped room for $150 per night. The room is updated, fairly comfortable bed, yes the heater is noisy but you get used to it. Very clean, lots of fresh towels but what really sells this hotel is the location. We were very happy to have chosen it after hiking out from the rim after sunset, it was about 45 minutes from the trail head. The attached restaurant had very good and reasonable food, with excellent service. We appreciated the fact they were open until 10 PM! The breakfast omelets were amazing and kept us full until mid afternoon! Very nice staff, even though they were getting ready to close for the season, they were all friendly and helpful. Would return again when visiting the North Rim.
