If you're going to Whittier and you're not dealing with June Miller, you're missing the full experience and have no guarantee that everything will go right. First, let me say that I had not a little trepidation about a B&B in a 15 story building! June met us at the station and transported us to our "digs", a top floor, two bedroom condo overlooking the town and harbor. I think the B&B comes in because June delivers baskets of fruit and muffins and checks up on everyone (tucks you in) each evening. If you're looking for five star, step and fetch-it service, this is not the place. If you want a warm welcome, bend over backwards help having your definition of a good time, I haven't encountered better.

I had booked a charter for the following day to go king salmon fishing; the guy had troubles with his motor but assured me it would be ready the next day. We made it to outside the breakwater and returned. June, on seeing us back in the harbor called another captain and persuaded him to take us out (see my review of Jim Muhar's Prince William Sound Charters). He normally doesn't do day trips.

June made arrangements to secure our luggage, while we were out fishing, and we boarded the Alaskan Ferry Service's Kennicott for our ride to Juneau that night, a very pleased bunch.

“Nice room;nosiy elevator shaft”

The building itself is in dire need of repainting and repair. Upon entry, I considered leaving, particularly after seeing a note on the community bulletin board saying, "Whoever took the metal Welcome sign off my door, put it back." The lobby had furniure with holes in the fabric and chipped and dirty tiles. June was extremely helpful and concerned about our stay. The apartment itself was spacious and more than adequate. However, it was located on the 15th floor adjacent to the elevators. The noise from the elevators going up and down kept us awake--in fact my companion went to the parking lot to sleep in the van in order to get some sleep. I would not plan a return visit.

“Nice, Relaxing, Friendly People”

We booked a fishing charter and condo with June's B&B. We called her upon our arrival from the cruise, and June sent her staff immediately to pick us up from the cruise terminal. Unfortunately, we were off the ship very early morning (9 am), so our room's weren't ready, but they were kind enough to keep our baggage for us and let us roam around the tiny main streets of Whittier until the rooms were ready. Which, was only about an hour and a half. The condo's were a good size, we had a kitchen, dining room, living room, one bedroom, hide-a-way bed, and one bath. They were clean and inviting. Later in the evening, June sent up a breakfast basket which contained mufffins, juice, fresh fruit, coffee condiments, and even popcorn for an evening muchie. The condo is located in the main building in Whittier. Eighty percent of the residents live in this one apartment building. It was a couple minutes walk to the fishing area and one street over from the main market of the town. Fishing went great. June's husband, Ken was the captain of our boat, and Jim was his assistant. Ken kept us busy catching fish all day, and Jim never left our pole without fresh bait. They dropped some shrimp bait pots for us in the morning , and on the ride back, we got to pull them up, to find all sorts of shrimps in the boxes. It was great. We caught 125 pounds combined of halibut and rock fish. Jim cleaned all of our fish for us and hauled it over to the local fish packing company for shippping (Fee's). June called the local Chinese restaurant for us, and they agreed to cook up our shrimp for us for an appetizer, and the meal with this yummy appetizer was just as good. It was a wonderful day and we have lots of videos and pictures to remember this wonderful trip. I highly recommend June's B&B. My only downfall of the condo was we were there during only about an hour of darkness, so found it hard to get to sleep with all the sun coming in through the light colored curtains, but I found this throughout our nightly stays on our two weeks of Alaskan vacation.
