“Majestic and powerful Tugu”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Describing the experience of my stay at Tugu is a complex task… besides the charming personnel, the impeccable service and exquisite food, there is a majestic aura about it that is nearly indescribable. Mystic and powerful, the note of the hotel is announced the moment one enters the main hall. The powerful red ambiance lingers long after departure. It is a test of confidence for this grand hotel of character to impose on a fairly isolated part at Canggu beach, maybe such unmistakable identity needs a virgin land to stand on…For the beach, try to move beyond the hotel premises, where locals, tourists, surfers, bikers, beachcombers gather together for a moment of contemplation at sunset. one of the sublime moments at Bali!

Room Tip: there are rooms giving to the green and quiet lotus pond and rooms facing the roaring sea... we love...

“Rare and memorable stay in old Indonesian style boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

As in many reviews about Tugu Bali hotel I also can say that this hotel is like museum, full of old Indonesian and Chinese antique and statues. This gives to the hotel a lot positive effect and creates cousy feeling.

We stayed 3 first nights at Walter Spies pavillion and 7 nights in Puri Le Mayeur villa. Both rooms are very nice. Large rooms with very unique interior and furniture. Walter Spies room is perfect for two night visit to get touch from history and person of Walter Spies. What we and our kids loved most there, was outside bathtube and pool. Very good was sleep qulaity in this room, because of stoned walls and owen garden fense. In the later stay in Puri Le Mayeur was a bit disturbing hotel workers eachother noisy talk and working tools noise before starting to work at the morning 7-30-8.00.

Puri Le Mayeur is honestly most unique and memorable room we have stayed. Large rooms, big terrace, large bathtube, own small pool, great fishpound with lotos flowers and other tropic flora around the house. Very nice furniture and decorations. We loved it...

Food is absolutely Indonesian style like must be in such hotel. Dont expect gourmet, but for shure You get full overview about indonesian cooking from brekfast until the dinner. Food serving is absolutely without system, which means, that in one table people get their dishes in very different time and row, but maybe this is speciality of Indonesia everywhere :) Prices for food and drinks are morelike the same as in European restaurants.

For good and tasty alternative I can recomend Echo Beach BBQ and fish restaurant on the right side on the beach while walking out from backdoor and walking 10 minutes on the beach after the temple.

Staff was very friendly and we feel us all the time very welcome. Without this hotel I cant imagine our stay in Bali, because Tugu bali compensated a lot from the not the best feelings from overcrowded island with hughe traffic jams ald unfortunately already spoiled nature and beaches contaminated with trash. Sad to say, but due to those things it was our last visit to Bali island.

It is so nice and kind that Tugu Bali hotel has done so much to keep old Indonesian culture alive. Many thanks for nice moments!!!

Room Tip: Puri Le Mayeur villa is the best!

“Nice but far away from everything”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

Our travel agent totally made a mistake by choosing this hotel for us.

We staid there for our honeymoon. I mean the place is not bad, depend of your expectations and intentions while in Bali.

The beach is nos suitable for tourists, lots of waves (sure nice for surfers), dangerous waters, dark sand, very poor accommodations. We actually had to go all the way to Jimbaran to find an acceptable beach (30 minutes cab - 20 minutes scooter). Even worst when we found our perfect beach all the way down in Ungasan (more than an hour away).
This really limited our bali experience.

Anyway, the Hotel is not all that bad, even if I don't understand why it has so many amazing reviews. The accommodations are sure exotic, but rooms are pretty old and not very clean.
We got a suite with our on internal pool but we didn't use it once because of the aspect.
Bathrooms could really use some new galley and....well actually an overhaul.

The food was not bad but really overpriced.

Too bad that everything was paid for, from the first day we wanted to change hotel but it was not possible.

At least the staff was friendly and helped to make our stay a bit better.

Wouldn't advice this hotel for anyone under 50years old or maybe a surfer.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing your views on Hotel Tugu Bali. We are deeply sorry that we did not succeed in making your experience at Hotel Tugu Bali a positive memory as we had with our previous and current guests. As you see from other postings and on this link http://www.tripadvisor.com/TravelersChoice-Hotels-cTop25-g294225
Hotel Tugu Bali was awarded Tripadvisors Travelers’ Choice 2012 – Top 25 Hotels!

If we may address some of the issues in more details hereby:
Canggu Beach is one of the least touristic beaches on the island, and the stretch in front of the hotel is very quiet and relaxing as there are no sellers or other hotels next to us. Indeed, Canggu Beach is famous for its surf breaks. Also, Bali waves vary with the moon and the season and as sunset beach nestles in the quiet area of Canggu, it is the perfect place to surf, relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.
Bali is a volcanic island and thus most of Bali has darker sand color, and we clean our stretch of beach daily.

If you are looking for a white sand beach with calm and transparent water, I recommend you our sister hotel Tugu Lombok located where you can enjoy snorkeling directly from the hotel.

Tugu has a distinctive style and art/antiques that cater to some people’s personal taste, and may not to others.
The hotel rooms might look "old" comparing to the current trend of minimalist hotels because our interior design use antiques, natural and mature materials which with age gained their quality, uniqueness but especially a soul that can't be felt with modern materials. In Hotel Tugu Bali the wood, stones, traditional roof, antique ceramic floors are providing the feeling of being in another era, however we do keep regular maintenance and our rooms are guaranteed to be cleaned daily as per 5 stars hotel standard.

Tugu Hotels & Exotic Spas is a luxurious collection of hotels but also restaurants as we do have on top of our 4 hotel properties also 4 re-known restaurants in Jakarta-capital city of Indonesia.
Hotel Tugu Bali has been featured in Forbes Traveler World's 50 Best New Hotels, Destinasian, and will be in the next issues of Architectural Digest, Travel+Leisure, Harpers Bazaar, Condenast Traveller, etc. including 3 years of "Best Restaurant" awards from Tatler magazine in Indonesia; as a result we don't have the same price range like other restaurants, however our prices are very competitive with other fine dinings and 5 star hotels. We offer a large variety of food from Chinese, Peranakan, Javanese, Balinese and Western but also our special Indonesian themed cultural dining options

Please note that Hotel Tugu Bali is recommended for honeymooners, and we have a lot of young couples who enjoy the romantic atmosphere, and the privacy we offer.

Hotel Tugu Bali is located only 20 minutes away from the famous temple of Tanah Lot where traditional Kecak dances can be enjoyed daily but also from the chic downtown Seminyak and from a golf courses voted to be the best in Southeast Asia. We also have various activities inside the hotel such as spa, cooking class, balinese dance class, yoga class, gamelan class, medicine drink class...in order to keep our guests "busy" without having to travel too far away neither.

Once again, thank you for your feedbacks.
If there is anything we can do further for you or if you have further comments, please do not hesitate to contact me personally at my direct email address sjaton@tuguhotels.com .

“Visual Feast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

Apart from the friendliness, the most evident feature of Tugu is the visual history. Everywhere you look is a delight to the eyes.
This hotel is not for those that crave 5 Star modern perfection aka sterility, but more for those willing to embrace the old, historic and traditional, whilst still benefitting from some tastefully placed and secreted mod cons. Aircon, Internet being the two most obvious.
We spent four nights in a downstairs suite. The upside, the plunge pool, which assisted our acclimatization to the heat and humidity of Bali coast. Alternately, I am sure the upstairs suites are popular because of the views.
Which reminds me, get your complimentary hotel tour in early (likely with Stephanie) your wonderful host. So much history to learn about in such a modestly sized hotel.
I could go on but would be repeating many other's positive comments.
Alas, like so much accommodation in Asia, you will need to be driven to treats outside the hotel, unless you're a surfer!  Of course, there is plenty on offer in the hotel so no great need to stray often.

“excellent property”

would definitely recommend this hotel; not just for the beautiful property, but also for the cultural experience the hotel offers. Especially love the pool and sunken bathtub surrounded by a fish pond. the restaurants were a showpiece of themselves with beautiful presentation of food but a bit bland in taste. thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. It started with the airport transfer when we were picked up promptly and welcomed with a cold moist towel, chilled water and fruit basket during our ride to the hotel
