“Stunning”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2011

We stayed at Villa Raja for 6 nights with my extended family. What a gem and a credit to its owners and staff. The design is extraordinary and even after staying there for a few days, we were discovering new features. The pics on the website are exactly what the villa is like. Each of the bedrooms has its own style - we stayed in the stunning master bedroom. You end up constantly reminding yourself that the villa is not hundreds of years old. It makes the modern villas on offer look so sterile and boring.

The water filtration system and the mossie screens on the windows are an added bonus.

The staff - from Kiki the manager, to Nyoman the chef and all the other staff - are wonderful. While we went out for few meals, I think the food was better at the villa.

Cinema Raja got a work out from the kids, but for me, sitting on the terrace looking out over the rice fields was the just the tonic I needed.

We were worried it might be a bit isolated but it is only a few minutes drive to Echo Beach (make sure you visit Deus for a meal) and 15-20 mins into Seminyak. Roy the driver is a real find - and a great tour guide.

I'm not a huge fan of the "new" Bali, but Villa Raja makes the craziness all worthwhile.

Can't wait to go back.

We stayed at Villa Raja for 2 weeks and we could hardly tear ourselves away at the end. The villa was gorgeous - so many details. I had looked at so many villas on line but nothing was even close to this for creating a special atmosphere. The food was incredible! Nyoman outdid himself with every meal. The entire staff made us feel so welcome and the kids adored them. The last day the maids arranged for a stylist to come in and dress the girls in traditional costume. They also arranged in house massages which were great. The value of staying in a villa is so great. The experience of getting to know the staff and the moeny savings of eating in made it so much better than staying in a hotel. I cannot say enough about the place. we cannot wait to go back

“Villa Raja- amazing Private villa with great staff”

We just returned from staying at this villa for 10 nights with rotating family and friend’s . This villa was magical and amazing. As soon as you enter the doorway you are led into a cave of tantalizing feasts for the eye. Our kids were happy and well taken care of by the beautiful warm staff, they spent all day going from the pool, the waterslide and the cinema room, As parents when your kids are happy then you are happy. The meals the staff prepared were so economical and delicious we dined in most nights. The traffic in Bali is horrendous now, so it’s important to stay in a place you enjoy. This villa has it all, luxuriously soft beds, artistic spacious bath rooms, captivating decor, personable touches, the softest grass we've ever walked on, beautiful pool but watch out blondes you hair goes green with the chemicals used, pond’s and fishes everywhere, cinema room to die for, loads of nooks to explore, a kids bedroom out of a fantasy book with a waterslide to keep the little ones amused, wooden decor everywhere that tells a story and leaves you mesmerized by it's beauty, great vistas of tranquil rice paddies and lastly trustworthy and honest staff always happy to help and make your stay enjoyable. It's not the sleek modern environment many desire these days but if you value privacy, like an artistic feast for the eyes and want to feel the original Bali this is a great villa to choose. Our compliments to the owners for creating and sharing such a beautiful villa to stay in. Five stars ++++

“Live like a king at Raja”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2008

I have been to Bali 9 times now and have always stayed in luxurious seaside hotels. This time I was travelling with a group and we decided to try a Villa, mainly to save money. I was a little apprehensive, but I can honestly say that after staying in Villa Raja I will never stay in a hotel again.

The villa overlooks the green rice paddies of Canguu, a traditional Balinese village away from the hustle bustle but conveniently close to Seminyak, where the best restaurants (try wonderful French cuisine at Warisan- one of Robert Deniro's favourite restaurants) and clothes shops are located.

One of the best things about the villa was the privacy. We had huge, gorgeous rooms, all with walk in robes and luxurious en suites, a large pool (with super fast slippery slide), opulent cinema all to ourselves! No fighting tourists for a nice, shady spot by the pool!

We also had three staff, who every day would feed us, do our laundry and clean our rooms, all inclusive in the price (which ridiculously) was lower than most resorts I've stayed in!

Villa Raja is also beautifully designed. Packed with antique furniture and building materials, it's a fabulous collection of Balinese design that has obviously taken many years to accumulate and has been put together by someone with an eye for luxury style and art.

Despite its traditional appearance the villa enjoys all of the western mod-cons, the whole place operates on a silver water processing system, so the water you shower in, swim in and drink from the tap is 100% safe. After many visits to Bali I have never experienced this. Even in the biggest resorts all water you contact cannot enter your mouth and this can be annoying- and dangerous! The huge cinema screen, sound system and wireless internet were also some high tech pleasures.

In the end it's the little things, befriending the Villa's pet turtle, feeding the giant fish, having a massage by the pool, that made it so special. It left the resort experience for dead.

If I had any criticism it would be the Villa's rock n' roll / new age CD collection, I'm more of a jazz girl myself, but next time I stay in Villa Raja I'll bring my I Pod!

  • Liked — The privacy and luxury.
  • Disliked — the CD collection! Maybe feeling guilty about having staff look after me all the time... Felt like giving them a day off!
