“Incredible Stay, but know what you're in for”

We had been looking for a family adventure to Alaska, and knew we wanted to have a unique fishing experience before our eldest went off
to college. What a great time!! Owners Lee and Cilla Robbins, who built the property and raised their kids on this island 30+ minutes off of Kodiak, are excellent hosts. The "Camp" consists of 5 or 6 cabins, each bedding up to 5 in comfy but not elaborate environs. Propane heat, warm beds, a toilet - sink room, and electricity generated by hydro-electric, so there's no whir of a diesel generator
in the background.

You're cared for by a hand-chosen staff that's about 2 -4 guests per host, and they're extremely accomodating. When we said that our oldest didn't really enjoy fish, they had a rib roast ready to slice him off a thick steak each evening; Lee made it a personal challenge to find fish Chris would want to eat, and had some battered halibut fried up like french fries. Chris ate them, but still went for the moo-cow the next night.

Each night at dinner Lee went around to all the guests and asked what they wanted to do the next day. Choosing your activities, whether fly fishing, bear watching, kayaking with whales, or ocean fishing for halibut, salmon and ling cod, was just that simple. You also picked out what you wanted packed for lunch. And the food was incredible!!! Hearty soups, fresh-baked breads and cakes, and the freshest fish prepared moments after being caught. Our 8 year-old had
a blast watching them fillet our daily catch, vacuum-sealing and freezing it for our trip home, then watching the resident eagles (we counted more than 15) swoop up the carcasses from the beach.

We packed a total of 130lbs of halibut, silver, pink and king salmon for our return trip. But when we were boating in from Kodiak airport
on arrival, Lee asked what I hoped to catch. I told him we weren't really experienced fishermen, but we hoped to nail 150lbs of fish. Lee went into his own freezer stash and rounded out our catch to hit our 150lb goal!! Now that's a host!

Understand that any similar lodges are dearly expensive. All four of us could have had our own room at a Four Seasons and spent less than we did here. But we had an experience that we hope to repeat more than just once in our lifetime, with great people.
