We came to Sadie Cove Wilderness Lodge on the advice of our best friends in Tucson who had been there some years ago for their honeymoon. They had such a good time and couldn't stop talking about their trip. They even have photos of the lodge as screen savers on their computers.
In 2010, when we began planning our trip of a lifetime to Alaska, Sadie Cove Lodge was the first place on our list and the first we made sure to book. We were so glad we went. We booked the whole lodge just for our group of 6. The whole state is magnificent, but Sadie Cove, Keith and Randi Iverson and their welcoming staff, were the utmost highlight of the entire trip.
We stayed in a cabin high on the hill where bald eagles would fly by at eye level. We saw a humpback whale one morning right from our bed by the window looking out onto the ocean. We saw many sea otters, caught loads of halibut, hiked into virgin timber forests, kayaked for miles, and ate the best food we have had in years. I just can't express how good a really fresh wild salmon can taste, or a halibut caught that same day, especially in the professional and loving hands of Randi - chef extrodinaire.
Everything was perfect even if it did rain on one of the days we were there. On that day we took a little break and had a long sauna followed by a 2 hour kayak trip and then some fishing when the rain let up. Dinner that night was fresh scallops and halibut with lemon cream sauce that I will remember with delight for the rest of my life.
The lodge and all the cabins were sparkling clean and neat with handhewn touches everywhere. Keith has done a service to all of his guests, past and future, in building this wonderful place all out of driftwood and all by hand. Books about the flora and fauna of Alaska are everywhere and what you don't feel like reading about, Keith and Randi are very willing to tell you about. The stories of their lives in Alaska are fascinating and their knowledge of the area is encyclopedic.
If you want to see and experience something that has retained it's own personality and has not sold out to commercialism and phoney "Alaskana" baloney, go to Sadie Cove Lodge.
We, our family, and our friends will definitely be back and, yes, we too have Sadie Cove Lodge screen savers on our computers now.
