Our Pioneer Inn experience was like traveling back in time to a real home-away-from-home. I was not able to make reservations online, but when I called to inquire, Amy treated me like a customer she'd known forever. In less than 5 minutes, I had a reservation for a suite at an incredibly reasonable rate. Amy is one of the owners--how often do you get to speak with the owner of any hotel anymore? I suppose more often in Alaska than most places, but it did make me feel like my patronage mattered. When we arrived, Amy greeted us and we chatted and shared stories. We immediately felt very comfortable. The suite was perfect for us. It was very simply furnished--not fussy--with tons of space. It had a kitchen, which is very helpful for vegan travelers who need to bring food with us, and a large comfortable bed. Even though the suite was on the first floor, it was amazingly quiet, and everything (except maybe the Spit) is within walking distance. We live in Anchorage and love taking mini-breaks to Homer. We hope to stay at the Pioneer Inn whenever we go.
