Alaska is expensive. We could only hope that the Pioneer Inn was OK. When we arrived, Amy, the owner, took one look at this elderly couple who could hardly walk after the long drive to Homer form Anchorage and apologized that we had been given a second story room. (No elevator.) She asked if we would prefer a smaller room downstairs, and that she would take our luggage upstairs if we wanted that room. The upstairs room had a kitchenette, which we did not need, and the downstairs had a view of the bay, which was lovely. We chose the smaller room. She said it had been promised to a couple who come every year and use that room, but that they would understand. And as we were only staying two nights, it would be O.K. It was clean and comfortable, within walking distance of a AAA recommended restaurant, and the owners were friendly and helpful.
