“noisy and hot. we left after one night”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2010

No air conditioning, the noise from the people in the room next to us made it sound like they were IN our room, the mosquito netting blocked any airflow from the ceiling fan, and the locals next door were noisy and invaded our privacy. horrible experience--not a wink of sleep and we left after one night. the hotel down the street was wonderful--go there instead

“The only place to stay in Huahine”

Meet with a major room upgrade, an incoherent manager, and a Cuba Libre composed 1/2 litre fruit, 1/2 litre rum, Pension Mauarii defined itself as the chilled alternative to 1000 dollar a night shacks on stilts who mix Robinson's lime juice in with a Margharita. Hell - the Mauarii might not know how to mix a cocktail but who in French Polynesia does? Vetea and the vahines were always charming, helpful when required, kept the restaurant open late and, in general, beat Relais Mahana and Te Tiare hands down in what you'd really want if you've made the decision to visit Huahine rather than Bora or Moorea. The beach and backdrop are absolutely stunning - just be wary of the Travis Bickle look-a-like with the axe in the vanilla plantation down the road. This is an unprecedented 'yes' vote. Oh, and the rooms are very cool - makes shabby chic look shabby. Wonderful co-guests (apart from les colonials).

“maybe the only place to stay in Huahine?”

Huahine is a nice island but not the place to stay longer than 3 days (we stayed 5).
Mauarii is more a hotel than a pension - lacks of privacy.
Restaurant serves good food but a bit overpriced for what you get.
The pension has one of the only beaches on Huahine Iti. For snorkeling just next to the hotel the best option, other areas where covered with sea slugs... Best for snorkeling is a motu.
No canvas chairs around, bicycle are actually for free but where not working as pedals where broken.
Canoes are a great way to get around - for free.
Hire a car in the pension is a good option to see the island but much better was the trip around the island by boat. Book the tour with the shop next to the pension.
Diving was a bad experience in Huahine hence the shop located next to the pension. If you are looking for big fish, loads of coloured fishes as promised by the owner do choose a different dive shop. The only thing you get is loads of promises not kept.

“Flintstone Pension”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 March 2009

Very quirky and interesting place. Was supposed to stay 3 nights but only stayed for 1. Very friendly guy on the reception counter too. Place looks cheap & it's cheaply built, with local plywood, stones, twigs & logs etc., just a few feet from the beach, but it's expensive to stay here.

The thin board, half wall between the two rooms gives you little privacy. After hearing the girls in the adjacent room going to the toilet at night, listening to them clean their teeth, suffer their lights going on and off, faulty toilet cistern running all night, no air conditioning or fan, twig for a towel rail & no hot water at $300 a night, it was just a bit too quirky for us. You can prop the windows open for air with a twig & there is a mosquito net against all the mozzies which is handy...

It's a pretty isolated spot on the smaller island. There's a small restaurant on site that you walk through to get to the reception & entrance.

A little local shop selling cans of tuna, spam, cans of drinks, water etc., is also about a 20-30 minute walk away.

A guy has a boat moored on site that you can can pay to go scuba diving with too. Lots of tiny ants in the room and spotted a lizard or two, but then they can be fun. Bit like camping really.
