My wife and I went to Huahine, unplanned, this Spring. We hire a car at the airport and drove around looking for a place. We've stayed at multiple five star resorts but the initial appeal of this place tempted us. Also, the price was way less than Relais Mahana just down the road. We didn't want the isolation or price of the Te Tiare. Remember, you get what you pay for. The first night we were in a garden bungalow and then they gave us a free upgrade to a beach bungalow.
The food was excellent, although we didn't have breakfast which we thought a little over priced. We brought our own breads, yogurts etc elsewhere.
We loved the authentic charm and character of the gardens and bungalows. It was warm in the room but the breeze off the water was fine (remember, we didn't pay for AC).
Our complaints....... The thatch roof of the bungalow was not chemically treated (like at the big resorts) and whatever critters were living up there continually rained tiny poops on us. It was like sand on the bed sheets. I'd brush them clean but pretty soon the same again. The mosquito net doesn't have small enough mesh to keep this out.
Also, one night the 'waitress' gave us such atrocious service, you just cannot imagine. My wife wanted the lagoon fish with vanilla sauce. There was no lagoon fish available (huh! - in Polynesia) and when she picked a different fish dish they wouldn't put the sauce with it. Yes, I admit we do have a language barrier, but the service was the worst I have EVER experienced. The food that did come was very good, but we were the only ones in the restaurant and the waitress left and never came back. We were offered no desert, coffee, or anything else. She actually closed the kitchen and turned ALL the light off and left us in the dark. We even had to find our way back to our room in the dark! - Yes, I'm talking ALL the lights around the gardens, everywhere. (It was not a power outage because we had lights in our room.) Quite extraordinary.
Please keep in mind, that we are pretty easy going and have many friends we've made in Polynesia over the years. Contrast the waitress with some locals we met in Fare who took us by boat (the only access) to their little house by the lagoon for the day. They fed us, entertained us and showed the genuine and more common Tahitian hospitality.
We'll probably go back, the hotel charm was great, the food excellent and the cost reasonable. I guess we all have bad days, but that particular lady should NOT be waiting tables.
Room Tip: Take a spare sheet and rig it over the bed to keep the bug poops off.
