“Rustic accommodation on the Denali Highway. Beautiful spot!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2011

My 2-week stay at Gracious House was peaceful and memorable. I was working in the area and used the lodge as a base, as it is the only reasonable lodge between Cantwell and Tangle Lakes. I very much enjoyed my stay at this slice of real Alaska, and the friendly, hard-working owners, Carol and Butch, ensured that I was well fed and well cared for.

The lodge is located on the graveled Denali Highway, about halfway between Cantwell and Paxson, where the road crosses the Susitna River. It is about as remote as you can get on the Alaska highway system. The setting is spectacular, with the Clearwater Mountains towering above the boreal forest and the tall peaks of the Alaska Range in the distance. There are plenty of trails in the area to explore for the adventurous, either walking, running, 4-wheeling, or snowmobiling.

The complex comprises a cluster of cabins, trailers, sheds, machinery, bar/café, airstrip, gas station, etc. Lots of neat old relics, machinery and other assorted Alaskan stuff hanging around. The lodging that I stayed in was a couple of Atco trailers with a large common room between them where all the meals were served buffet style. The room was pretty much standard for an Atco trailer – small, 2 single beds, 2 closets – but creatively decorated with a wide assortment of dolls, family pictures, and other unique and kitschy décor. The room was reasonably clean and there were a couple of shared bathrooms.

The food was great. Carol and Butch cooked up a wide assortment of tasty buffet style meals for us, from tacos to grilled salmon to roast pork. We never went hungry! The on site bar is rustic and should not be missed. Butch owns a few airplanes and can take people out to remote lakes for fishing or hunting or just general sightseeing.

I would definitely recommend Gracious House to passing travelers who would like to peacefully enjoy rustic Alaska in a beautiful natural setting. The prices are reasonable, especially considering it is located in the middle of nowehere. I hope I am able to pass that way again.

“Grew up There”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2011

As a 40 yr old woman that was blessed to be raised in this area, I only wish that those that visit now could have experienced this place in it's prime! Butch and Carol are my parents, and although I am no longer in the Alaskan area, we woke every morning to a SPECTACULAR view of Mt Deb out our window, and an AMAZING view of the Susitna River every night! I was fortunate enough to re-visit this lodge July 2010, and enjoy a FABULOUS day trip via one of the TRUE Alaskan Bush Pilots left on this Earth!! We passed through gravel pits, on to tundra, next to glaciers, and over mountain passes! All within a short 2 hours time frame!!! Most people spend their entire lives never witnessing this amazing change of Alaskan landscape! In it's "Glory Days", the Gracious House Lodge was the setting for an AMAZING movie made to play in Japan, hosted numerous tour buses, and instilled TRUE values in us, as children. We had pack horses as pets, learned to ride ATVs, motorcycles, and 4 wheelers, and held our first Customer Service jobs as waitresses at the tender age of "As soon as you can see over the counter"!! If you have never traveled the Denali Highway, I HIGHLY recommend it! Bring your kids/grandkids/etc! Show them the BEAUTY of Alaska in a way you will NEVER witness in any other state or place EVER!!!!

Carol and Butch are very personable and extremely hard working folks. Gracious House is now a B&B, but we lucked out and were included in great dinners with a group of mine exploration people. The area is beautiful and off the general beaten path. A wild and remote area, peaceful and serene. Once again we enjoyed the visit.

“Adequate lodging; good food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2006

The room itself looked like it was straight out of the 70s; however, it was clean and adequate. The shower took a very long time in the morning to get hot water. The food was very good, though - anything you can order with fresh ingredients from the garden is good. I would highly recommend the strawberry-rhubarb pie, which I ate for both dinner and breakfast.

“Denali Highway Roadhouse”

The Gracious House Lodge is an Alaskan roadhouse located at mile 82 of the Denali Highway, roughly half-way between Cantwell and Paxson. The accommodations are modest, yet adequatem, suitably clean and reasonably priced given its remote location. A quonset hut serves as a diner, with limited grill food menu, serving good breakfasts. It is also worth stopping in at the "Sluice Bar" for a beer, or a shot of "Wild Turkey," which is was a favorite watering hole for gold miners before the mine closed down. Patrons have plastered the ceiling with dollar bills. The Gracious House also has float plane service for hunters and fishermen. You can expect to meet an interesting assortment of other guests. During our stay, we had an interesting conversation with a group of geologists that were studying the nearby 2002 earthquake and fault lines.
