“Depends on the room you stay in”

We stayed here twice in a double room. This place is good value with a decent lounge area, free computer with internet access to use and free secure parking. The beds are very large and comfortable - super king size. The staff are also helpful. The free tea and coffee is great although the free breakfast is just 2 slices of toast.

The 1st room we stayed in was near the lobby and was dark and smelt very damp. The shower was also cold. The second room was upstairs and much nicer with a lovely big bathroom. So if you get one of the nicer bedrooms it is great.

Friends who had a room overlooking the main street said it was very noisy because of a train/tram that goes by at regular intervals. Although their room itself was fine.

“Good choice”

Stayed here twice on our trip and can definitely recommend it. The more expensive queen rooms are worth the extra $10. The only thing I didn't like was people smoking in the small courtyard just off the main common area. They may as well be smoking inside. A cooked breakfast was worth paying extra for. Location was good 10 minute walk to the town centre. Would stay there again.

“Unhelpful receptionist, brown stains on towels”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

We reviewed every place we stayed in Costa Rica and mainly gave 4s and 5s - but this place was terrible and we're genuinely baffled by the decent reviews. Our experience began badly and got worse. The receptionist who greeted us on the evening of December 22 was surly and unhelpful. The room we were taken to looked nice enough (very large, wooden floors, huge bed) but we soon discovered brown stains on the towels, glass doors on the bathroom (do you want to watch the person you're with go to the toilet?) and paper-thin walls so that, even if you don't see the person you're with on the loo, you'll hear everyone else in the hotel doing their business. The breakfast included in our rate was two slices of burnt toast with tea or coffee. Everything else, including orange juice, costs extra. San Jose is a big city - I'd guess you could find somewhere much nicer than this for far less than the $50-odd we paid.

I'm sorry you had such a disappointing stay at Costa Rica Guesthouse. We thankfully have consistently great feedback about our staff, I'm sorry you found otherwise.

I'm also sorry if there were stains on the towels, that is not par for the course and we would have happily exchanged them, had we known.

We did a big remodel of a 100 year old house, which is not a purpose built hotel, so you will not find the same soundproofing as in a Best Western etc. That being said, the walls are that of a 100 year old house and generally very thick and made of brick. Where possible we retained original features, and the doors on the bathrooms are all original to the house. They are frosted glass and not transparent.

The free breakfast is very simple, but there are reasonably priced options if people wish something more substantial. Many places in this price range do not have any kind of breakfast included. We also have free coffee and tea available all day.

I feel our prices are very reasonable for what we provide, I'm sorry you did not find it to be so.

“Nice room but crappy breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

Stayed here for the first & last night of our two weeks in CR. Was disappointed with the breakfast on the first visit. We were in the lounge for ages waiting for breakfast despite 3 staff on duty who didn't acknowledge us. Then we found it was only cold, dry toast & they were out of coffee. Water for tea was lukewarm. Tried to find a better place for our final night but in the end realized it was good value & convenient. If you don't expect much for breakfast, it is good. Desk staff were friendly enough.

I booked thru CR backackers so thought we could also access the pool there but don't think we could. It was rather cool during our visit so we didn't need to find out.

Bathrooms were clean. Rooms were big & airy. Beds were comfy. Breakfast sucked. Location was good.

“Comfortable and quiet”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

We stayed in a double room for a few nights in August and came back again for a night in November. The room was spacious and clean. We also had a balcony. Bathroom was simple and clean. There were two computers for public use but wi-fi was available. Free breakfast was two slices of toast with jam, tea and coffee. They did offer eggs, bacon...etc for a small fee. The staffs were extremely helpful and most of them spoke English. There was also a information counter to enquire about trips and tours in Costa Rica. The area was quiet to have a good night sleep. It took about 10-15 minutes walk to downtown. The stay at Costa Rica Guesthouse was pleasant, would definitely go back there again!
