“Mediocre at Best”

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for a few days and felt that it was a bit mediocre for the price that we paid for the rooms. I would agree with the previous reviews that the grounds are very nice but I think that the rooms need some remodeling. The air conditioner in our room was not powerful enough to keep the room cool. We had the air conditioner on full blast and it was still quite muggy in our room. The bathroom in our room looked like it had not been cleaned in a while and there was dirt all over the floor of the bathroom. Our sheets seemed rather old and they probably needed to be replaced. The towels also seemed rather old and had alot of visible stains on them which also indicates that they need to be replaced. The location of the hotel is such that it is built very close to the mangrove area which tends to make the entire hotel grounds very hot and muggy compared to the coastal hotels. This is probably part of the charm of being very close to the jungle but those of you looking for a retreat after a hard days trek through the jungle should probably look elsewhere for a better hotel for your money. The general heat and humidity of the interior of Puerto Jimenez is such that tourists who are not used to such heat will probably require a hotel that has adequate aircon or is closer to the water. We ate lunch at the Palms restaurant down the road from this hotel and you could feel the breeze which was very refreshing as compared to the sauna like atmosphere of the interior. This was our first time to Costa Rica and we would recommend going with a hotel closer to the water as it is totally worth the extra money. In terms of the staff at the hotel, they did not seem particulary happy to be working there which indicated some problems with the management. We had dinner at the hotel on occasion and the food was always very tasty - kudos to their chef. The bar staff was also friendly in general. Overall, we were disappointed with the sanitary conditions of the hotel room and probably would not go back.

“Disappointing”

We just returned from La Choza, and were very diasspointed. We are budget travelers, so we know not too expect much when paying reasonable prices, but this was pretty bad. First of all, although the grounds of the hotel are nice and quaint, the rooms are extremely damp and musty. We had mold on our sheets, for example. We switched rooms, and it smeeled just as bad as the first.

Second, the owners were very distrustful and they treated both their own staff and local workers poorly. For example, they recommended a guide for us to visit a nearby park. We were told we must pay the hotel for the service, but that they do not take any of the guide's profit. After returning from our tour, we witnessed a public altercation between the owners and the guide because they took part of his money. Also, one of the owners offered his bicycles to us so we could ride to the beach. We thought he was being nice until we were stiffed with a $40 bill.

I would be careful if you stay here.

“An amazing place”

An amazing place. The ownership is always there hanging out with the guests, making them feel at home, and helping them get acclimated and informed about the Osa. We felt right at home. We showed up with a couple tuna we had just caught and the kitchen cooked us up a gourmet dinner complete with ceviche from our fish. It was amazing. Also don't miss the bar which amazingly looks right out over the rain forrest and frequently hosts a troop of monkeys.

“I loved "La Choza del Manglar"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 May 2005

When I visited "La Choza del Manglar" i was given a large welcome by a happy staff member and shown a number of different rooms that were available. Prices are very good. They cost about 35 to 50 per single with taxes and breakfast included. I had to walk over a bridge that led to the most beautiful private gardens believable and eventually was shown to cabin number 8. As soon as they opened the door i was sold. It had been hand painted like the forest and even included controlled lighting to savor those special moments. I saw monkeys, raccons, kinkajou (fotos included), parrots, scarlet macaws, reptiles and butterflies to name but a few of my visitors during my three day stay at "La Choza" The food was excellent and the breakfasts are large and filling for those that have a long day planned. Pablo and Maritza do great things in the kitchen and Maicol works hard at the bar. Jacqueline will bend over backwards to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. What more is there to say besides the fact that all tours can be arranged by the staff. This is the ideal place to start and/or end a visit to Corcovado National Park or to hang out for awhile in an extremley natural environment while visitng the OSA.
