I have been in China for two and a half years and hence have seen my share of hostels so trust me when I say that Shanghai SOHO International Youth Hostel is:
A truly amazing place! The staff are great, which naturally makes a lot of difference, but also the place has great interior design comprising of parts and levels of the hostel dedicated to different activities (such as a reading loft, etc.). Some of the rooms don't have windows but you can ask for one that does when arranging your stay. I love the fact that the rooms have carpets and CENTRAL HEATING/AIR! Especially the latter is not easily found in that part of China. Great food, great drinks, free hot water for tea and noodles 24/7, no curfew, smoking areas, free wifi EVERYWHERE..this place really does have it all.
And last but definitely not the least...they are pet friendly so if you are like me and like to travel with your fluff then this place should be your choice...there is a nice pedestrian-only area right outside (ignore the scooters and bikes - those are just a given anywhere in China) the hostel and it's right by the Suzhou Creek. My fluff and I were able to spend hours walking around central Shanghai from there as it is about a 10 minute walk from People's square.
