The temple atop the hill is visible from quite far away. Melkote is more than just this temple, It is loaded with lots of small temples and temple-ponds (Kalyani's). A small stroll around the town, will take you to akka-tangi kola - which is two kalyani's next to each other. A half constructed temple, which is a favorite place for film shooting. Loads of film shooting happen in this town, you might just get lucky to see one of them during your visits.
The main kalyani of melkote is apparantely the largest kalyani in India.
Melkote is supposed to be famous for puliyogre (A south india dish made of tamarind and rice), though i've been to this place an infinite amount of times and have tasted it in different eateries. They haven't lived upto my expectations. Guess that itself is what they claim to be their 'awesome puliyogre'.
