A lot of my friends have been raving about Brown Sahib and recommending it to me. Although I'm nto a great fan of eating in malls, the other day we all decided to go to Brown Sahib for dinner. And what a feast for the senses. I'm half-Bengali and half-Punjabi, and have to say the food was divine.
First, the decor -- it's extremely spacious and elegantly decorated. None of that dim lighting, which Delhi restaurants are famous for. And lovely jazz on the speakers. What was also nice was that the tables were spaced far from each other, so you didn't have to overhear what others were saying. I loved the dhotis the servers were wearing. Very traditional and lovely.
The food was simply fabulous. We had daab chingri -- mustard prawns in a green coconut shell, betki paturi, masoor dal, chenchki and fish chops -- in the reverse order. All the dishes were spiced perfectly. No punjabification of the cuisine which was a pleasant change. And which also might be the reason why some Punjabis don't take to the flavour. Two of my friends had the Anglo-Indian dishes. Fabulous stuffed crumbed crabs, prawn chiney kebab (which is the Indianised version of thermidor) and crumb chops. And we finished it all off with bhapa doi (steamed curd which I've never ahd before) and bread and butter pudding. Really yummy.
The restaurant was packed when we went, so I;d suggest making a reservation fi you dont; want to sit outside for a while. So nice to come across a classy restaurant with authentic food. It's rare, so I'd strongly recommend everyone visits.
