“Tropical tranquility”

This is a really unique place that will appeal to nature lovers who aren't afraid to 'rough it' a bit. The road to the centre is a very rough village road, so you will need to get a tuk tuk or 4WD to take you there. Cars and vans may struggle. It is realistically an hour away from Kandy.

We got the second river room, which is more closed in than the upstairs one, and furnished in a rustic, sparse way. The windows have no glass, so giant moths can come into your room at night. We hung up sheets to prevent this. The view from the outside balcony is lovely, with the river rushing past. There were a couple of mosquitoes, so bring some DEET repellent with you. The river room is near some staff quarters, and the staff also like to dip their feet in the river (swimming in the strong current might be too dangerous). So you will not be totally secluded.

The bathroom was outside our room, and staff will provide you a torch to get around. The bathroom was also quite open, but clean and with hot water.

The vibe of the centre is very relaxed, and there are yoga pavilions scattered throughout the hillside. Do take a walk up to the top of the hill for beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. For nature lovers, there are plenty of birds and bats to look out for. However, it is more of a relaxing resort than an outdoorsy place, and there aren’t many places to hike. We did a short hike to the waterfall (1 hour return minus swim time) and had a nice refreshing swim. This was the extent of the hiking.

If you choose to stay here, select full board (b’fast, lunch and dinner included, but fruit juices and alcohol are charged extra). It is too much of a pain to leave the resort once you are there, and it certainly is not meant to be a ‘base’ for exploring Kandy. All meals are buffet style, with a good selection of Sri Lankan curries. At b’fast, you can try delicious buffalo curd with treacle, fresh fruit from the property, savoury Sri Lankan treats, as well as toast with butter and jam. The fruit juices here are super fresh, thick and delicious. At lunch and dinner the curries are mostly vegetarian (we had some delicious eggplant curry and cabbage curry), with maybe a prawn or chicken curry thrown in, or maybe some fish cutlets. There is usually at least one specialty at the buffet, such as milk rice for breakfast or some dosai for dinner. Dinner starts with a delicious soup and coconut roti, and you can have beer or wine for an extra charge. You will certainly eat well here and the open restaurant area is beautifully decorated, well-shaded and comfortable.

A laundry service is also provided. One of the staff was able to obtain observation car tickets for the next leg of our train ride, which was much appreciated (how one obtains these much desired tickets still eludes me). The charismatic owner, Waruna, has three lovely dogs who are friendly with the visitors.

Overall we had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. I think you need a minimum of two nights here to make the journey worth it. Personally, two nights was perfect as we are outdoorsy people who like hiking. But if you want to just unwind, do yoga and meditate, then you may enjoy staying longer.

This was great. After one night in Kandy, spent somewhere a little too 'Western', we took the advice from TripAdvisor and gave Waruna a call. That day, he booked us in for three nights (Jan 4-7). We loved it (even though this was a time when it rained a lot).
Everything the other reviews say is correct. And don't worry, it's not a 'herbal hippy yoga retreat' - it's just a beautiful yet rustic retreat in the mountains. And it's not 'too luxurious' either - just the right balance of aesthetic and unpretentious. We had squirrels watching us in our outdoor shower and dogs that we took on walks each day. We had massages and swam under the waterfall (please don't worry about leeches on the walk there - leeches are completely harmless; mosquitoes are much worse creatures!) and ate superb Sri Lankan meals Made from local ingredients (perhaps the best food we had in three weeks in Sri Lanka - Waruna, make sure you keep it authentic like this, don't pander to the tourists!). The service was great - in large part, because the staff there all seem like colleagues, not underlings. Waruna himself was off running his shop, and it's clear he really trusts his team. We visited the workshop (one minute's walk) and Mr Waruna's shop when we left and we would recommend both of these.
In short, superb. If you go, enjoy talking with the staff and sampling the cuisine.

“Stunning!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Can't rave enough about this place. It truly is a retreat. The bungalows are dotted around beautiful grounds and each one is unique - with individual furniture pieces, rustic style decor and murals created by Uncle Suri. I arrived late at night to a welcome drink and a delicious meal (the food really was fantastic and organic :)), even though I am sure the chefs were off duty. My first night I sat outside and soaked in the sounds of the wildlife, it really was tranquil and therapeutic.

The staff here are really friendly and helped me out a great deal when I had problems with my driver. Waruna, the owner, is a fantastic guy and he arranged another driver for me so I was able to carry on with the rest of my trip. I met Waruna and his lovely family at his antique shop and you would be missing out if you didn't meet him and visit his amazing shop.

My one regret is not staying here longer, but I will be coming back. There is a meditation hall, massage and other therapies overlooking the jungle, walks to do around the beautiful surroundings, yoga and the guys will arrange sightseeing (so I would use it as a base next time I stay). Apart from Samadhi Centre being a magical retreat, it is also special because of its people.

“Great place if you've got plenty cash”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

The 'resort' part is a little misleading, nevertheless, it's a fantastic hide-away if you're looking for some peace and quiet. The owener, Waruna, has designed Samadhi maximising it's jungle surroundings and incorpating Sri Lankan antiques - so it makes for a unique and interesting stay! The dinning hall is entirely powered by antique oil lamps at night time - loved it! Organize for the Aryuvedic massage (costs extra) at night time - the massage by candlelight is spectacular.
Be prepared for lots of travel time though, Kandy city centre is approx 45 mins away by car (considering the road conditions and traffic).

Would recommend a stay in Samadhi as the perfect wind-down.

In a peaceful and secret jungle setting one hour north of the hill Capitol, Kandy, I discovered an unusual, lush, verdant retreat tucked into a dissused tea estate.

Here you can meditate in a hall open to the Knuckles range of mountains, you can swim in rivers, birdwatch and discover a water-fall even before the sun rises or the first bird stirrs.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are home-made organic food, grown on the estate and fresh herbs from the greenhouse. A skilled Ayervedic lady doctor provides consultations and massage/herb baths. Reiki in a wooden pavillion and Barefoot Shiatsu are available.
