“Amazing Staff & Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2010

My husband and I arrived late at the Queens hotel without a reservation. They offered to show us all the available rooms, and personally walked us around the hotel examining each room until we found the perfect one. This is an ideal and very central location in Kandy; great for exploring and for its proximity to the Sacred Tooth Temple. The only downside is we stayed on the side of the hotel facing the temple which means we were awoken at 4AM each morning by the prayer call. We had ear plugs from the airplane which became very useful. Also the traffic in the morning is quite loud so if you’re a light sleeper or love to sleep in I would find a place away from the temple and away from the road. The complimentary hotel breakfast is great and a fun mix of east and west. We had curry and french toast each morning! I would highly recommend this hotel to all kinds of travellers!

The staff and the location were absolutely perfect. There is a travel/tours desk just inside the hotel who helped arrange all of our excursions and travel. Their contact details should you want to book in advance are: Royce Tours/www.roycetours.com/+94815625713/roycetours@hotmail.com. Their pricing was extremely competitive and they customized two tour packages for us. They even gave us options of places we could visit on the way to the airport to really maximize our visit.

“My low expectations were on par with reality”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2010

The two things going for this place are 1) its central location and 2) the beautiful old building. Kandy in itself is nothing too great and can easily be seen in a day, or single afternoon. I would recommend this place to people who want a central location to cut down on walking and using tuk-tuks in the smog thick streets of Kandy, however don't hold big expectations.

“Regal looking hotel - value for money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2010

Its a quaint looking royal hotel. But it looks like time has stopped and its been years since anyone thought of giving it a facelift inside or outside. But its truly value for money......really reasonable. Although the rooms look quite old and shabby to me. The staff was OK, bedsheets werent very clean, food was strictly ok, amazing location.

“Interesting Colonial hotel experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2010

This is a throw back to a Colonial era which has all but disappeared. This hotel is full of relics from past glory days. Your room will have Victorian and/or Art Deco furniture, the hotel has amazing chandeliers and oak stair cases... and it is really big! However the rooms are pretty basic but what it lacks in creature comforts it makes up for in character. As per previous reviews, it is a little worse for wear. We had a broken mirror and other aspects of our room were in need of repair. The balcony door on our first room did not lock and after some persistent persuasion, we were able to convince the hotel staff to give us another room. Just as well as the next day there were many monkeys who were having a great time jumping into rooms where the guests had left the windows opened. We didn't eat in the hotel, the restaurants looked a bit sad and there are great places to eat just a short walk away. I would stay here again, it was a bargain at £30 per night B&B for the two of us. Stay here if you want to experience Kandy from the Colonial era, don't stay here if you expect everything to be perfect. Oh, and don't book a car through the hotel. Whilst driving in Sri Lanka is exhilarating to say the least, The Queens Hotel arranged the most dangerous driver we had. The driver who was utterly reckless, the car had no rear view mirror, no fans (ie we couldn't see in the rain), no seat belts. If you insist on booking through Queens, ask to see the car, and the driver, before you pay.

“Don't Stay here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

This place is an absolute dump. The furniture in the lobby has more organisms growing on it than a Petri dish. So you can imagine what the bedrooms are like. Smelly, damp, dirty bathroom where you would be getting out dirtier from the shower than you were entering it. Reception staff rude also. While you're at actually, keep on driving through Kandy!
