“Like stepping back in time...............”

The minute I walked through the doors I fell in love with this place. Yes it is old. Yes the red carpet going up the grand stair case is a little worn. And the little elevator must easily be 100 years old, if not more. You will be received at reception with a level of professionalism and courtesy just not the norm any longer. And you may expect this from everyone working in this hotel. My room had high ceilings and a fan as well as ac. Instead of mosquito nets there was an electrical plug in device that eliminated any problem of bugs. I did have a room facing the street, which could have been a problem if I were in it during the day as the street was a little noisy, but I had better things to do than stay in my room during the day, in such an interesting place as Kandy. Yes the monks chanting at the Temple of the Tooth down the road aways did wake me up at 5am, and I really did not mind as this was part of the experience of visiting Kandy for me. Request an inside room facing the pool if you want to have it totally quiet. Kandy will never be known for it's nightlife so getting up early did not bother me. The hotel bar and pool are very nice. The restaurant was fine, breakfast in particular very good. There are 2 travel centers and 2 shops in the hotel. Staff members were always introducing themselves to me to make sure I had everything I needed and was comfortable. I certainly was. I had no problems with a lack of hot water at any time. As far as I am concerned the hotel is well maintained without being disnified. It is old and beautiful. And right in the center of town. I would not hesitate to stay here again and again.

Room Tip: Ask for an inside room facing the pool, which are quieter.

“Excellen restoration with minimum damage”

Queens is the best hotel for wisiting the Temple as it is just across the street to the temple. Rooms on the inside is a must as rooms facing the street and the Temple have continues traffic flowing by due to trafic route change some time ago. The hotel is a museum in its inside form and the restoration has been done with care and intelligence. Rarely do you have big, high rooms that have a nearly same size baathroom. Pool inside is small but comfortable. The place is for those who want to feel how thing were in colonial days.

“A step back in time”

Stayed at the Queens for two nights during a trip to Sri Lanka with my wife and parents. A really great experience, helped by the hotel's history, quaintness, charm, and great location. Rooms are just the right size. Though some overlook the lake that's literally across the street from the hotel, we took the advice of some Tripadvisors and took a room facing away from the lake for more peace and quiet. I think we made the right choice. Our room overlooked the pool area and a hill in the distance with a massive Buddha statue - hardly a bad view! The room itself was very comfortable, but bear in mind this is no modern hotel. The bathroom could use an update, as the historic quaintness works for the room, but no so much for the antiquated and poorly working shower. Pool was quite nice, evocative of the colonial era. Local swim classes use the pool often, as it's supposed to be one of the nicer pools in Sri Lanka, but they're hardly a bother at all. At night, the pool area sometimes turns into an al fresco eating area, which is fantastic. Food was very good, among the best during our trip. The dining hall is oh-so-colonial but that's the point in a place like this. Soak up the history. And don't miss the bar area, which is great for a happy hour drink, but also because it has great photos and relics from the hotel's golden age (including a 100-year-old menu with 100-year-old prices!). The location can't be beat. We read that other hotels in Kandy were a pain to reach because of the city's sometimes static traffic situation. But from this hotel, you can walk throughout the center of the city, to the lake, and to the Tooth Temple, which is literally across the road. Highly recommended for a quintessential Kandy experience. While there, don't miss the botanical gardens - the best I've seen in this part of the world, by a country mile.

Room Tip: I'd recommend choosing a room facing away from the lake to avoid the noise of the busy road down...

“Great location but rooms are basic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

This old colonial hotel is perfectly located, right next to the Temple of the Tooth and Kandy Lake.

The foyer is huge and very welcoming and the staff is extremely friendly, both at the reception and in the restaurant.

The rooms, however, are a bit basic. The owners have tried to maintain the orginal structure and materials as much as possible but e.g. the wooden floors are in need of a little fix-up. The door of our rooms was strangely crooked: on one side there was a 6-7cm gap under the door. The perfect entrance for a huge cockroach (Hey, it's the tropics. What can you do?) but also very annoying when loud guest enter from their late-night activities.

The strangest part was the bathroom. Also very basic and very small but it seemed to a cubicle that was added to the room in a later period. Right above the shower a part of the cubicle's ceiling was missing and you could see a part of the rooms original ceiling.

Excellent restaurant and also excellent choice at the breakfast.

“good location, beautiful foyer, basic rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

this hotel is in an ideal location for exploring Kandy, it is right opposite the sacred temple of the tooth and a large lake. the foyer area is very impressive, colonnial style, high ceilings and a large welcoming space. staff are very attentive. the rooms however, are adequate, and fairly basic. the rooms seem to have had little attention paid to them for some time, but this may be due to wanting to keep the authenticity from its original state. the hotel has a small amount of shops inside and a swimming pool. we did not use the pool due to our short stopover stay and the weather, however, the area looked nice. this hotel is a great place to stay for its history and authenticity. although, dont expect the rooms to be too luxurious as this did not seem to be the case with rooms on the second floor.
