My wife and I stayed for 2 nights at the Hilltop Kandy. Overall, we had a pleasant experience.
1) Food - Huge spread for breakfast and the buffets for lunch and dinner. But we did not find too many authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, and much of the varieties on offer was Western-influenced
2) Rooms - The Rooms are decent, though they (at least ours) leave a lot of room for improvement. Nothing fancy, and from the bathroom you hear people walking and talking on the corridor, and even in the next rooms. So, I was kind of unnerved at that.
3) Ambience - The ambience is good, and the views are also beautiful.
4) Courtesy of the staff - Staff were very friendly and seemed to be available just moments after a call has been made for assistance.
Disadvantages:
1) The climb up the hill to get to the Hotel virtually places you under Hotel-arrest. We thought of going out on a stroll to the town, as we normally do when visiting a new place. But, the steep climb dissuaded us and we stayed put at the Hotel.
2) Internet - Wifi is available, but at a cost of SLR 250 per hour. I felt this was a bit too much, considering they were charging quite a lot for the rooms anyway. This could have been a complimentary service
3) Reaching the rooms from the Reception seemed to take eternity. One has to walk a lot of distance to reach the rooms, and there are no elevators/lifts. One has to take dingy looking stairs
4) When there is a programme or function at the Party Hall, the music from the Hall can be heard blaring all over, giving you sleepless nights
5) The balconies overlook the Kandy bus and rail stations. So, people might find it a problem. We enjoyed it, though.
You need to stay at Hilltop if you do not complain a lot about there being rust stains along the bathroom shower curtains and such small stuff. Do not expect ultra luxury, and enjoy the place for the ambience.
