“good location and not bad price considering”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

considering where it is, right next to the lake. and what it is, a 200 year old wood and stone house with loads of character.

We didn't pre-book this place but most people seem to (huh?!) and we were offered a really good room when we turned up, for Rs2,000 with a new and stylish bathroom (the shared Broom rooms can be bad, i have read elsewhere). Didn't try the dining room downstairs but had an OK breakfast in a nice wooden room upstairs.

The room didn't have a view or balcony but that's ok as there was a shared terrace overlooking the lakeside and this was good for birdwatching at dusk when all the storks and crows compete for roosting space and fly around from tree-to-tree. Quite spectacular, if you like that kind of thing.

Staff not especially friendly but that's probably due to the fact that they've been working here for ages and seen it all. If i went back to Kandy I'd probbly stay here again.

Room Tip: Our room was first left at the top of stairs and was very quiet as it faced away from the road. For...

“Loved it ......but need ear plugs!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Great old colonial hotel in excellent location , next to Temple Of the Tooth. Has a wonderful wooden veranda to while away the evening on. Rooms are basic but ok and the mosquito net actually fitted the bed ....a rare find in the hotels we stayed in in Sri Lanka.
Has a restaurant on ground floor but we did not try it.
The only downside is the noise!! The birds descend to the trees around the temple and the hotel round sunset and are really noisy. The Temple is really noisy too at sunset ...and sunrise. But we could have lived with that ...it was the REALLY noisy Italian couple in the next room with no regard for others, that finished us off!
Thing is the rooms are simply partitioned off with wood and you can hear all from your neighbours room! So take some ear plugs if ya fancy any sleep at all!!

Room Tip: If there are some rooms that are not partitoned off with thin wood wall ...get that on! re breakfa...

“Excellent Value for Money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

Located in the centre of Kandy, just next to the temple of Tooth. The balcony has a beautiful seating area with lots of colonial charm. The rooms are basic but clean and the restaurant serves decent food. The balcony needs to receive another mention from where you can see the Kandy lake and lots of beautiful flower vendors on the road leading to the temple.

Room Tip: Better book early to get a room with an attached bath since they fill up early

“Charming Colonial Style, Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

A great value for money option in the heart of Kandy. Perfectly close to the Temple of the Tooth. After a not too friendly reception we were shown our potential room which we gladly accepted for a more than appropriate rate, considering the attached bathroom (cold water only!), the dark wood furniture and impressive high ceilings.
One of the highlights is the terrace on the first floor facing the lake and the park. And in case you are waken up early, you can use the chance to attend the first relic presentation of the day in the temple.

Room Tip: Upstairs, second room on the right hand side with attached bathroom - nice and cosy

“A good location at 5pm, perhaps not so charming at 5am”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

Warning - if you are anti-noise this IS NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU

What seems delightful at 6pm does not feel so charming at 5am the next day. Especially on loudspeaker and it runs for approximately 30 minutes so you can't go back to sleep.

But this place is quaint with a great balcony and so close to the temple. And you can't argue with the price

Cleanliness is average, no hot water (and it it ice cold, not lukewarm). This property has a lot of potential.

Room Tip: Rooms are mixed share and private bathroom
