“Super luxury”

I had been travelling solo around Sri Lanka and first went to Jungle Tide for a few days and was very happy with what I found. A comfortable, luxurious and character filled house set in a calm, peaceful, beautiful location with two of the friendliest people you are likely to meet. Martin and Rani are incredibly hospitible and seem to have a sixth sense to what you need whether its a slap up meal or to be left to it.

I stayed here for a few days before heading to Arugum Bay and enjoyed it so much returned on my way home for a few more days. People have mentioned the journey there from Kandy which, while I'm sure the novelty would wear off, I really enjoyed it and I made the trip a couple of times in a 3 wheeler. I loved the fact you could hide from the world while still feeling the adventure of the jungle. You could go to the local village and be warmly welcomed or vist local attractions (most would need a driver) or use it as a stop over to get refreshed before the next step.

There's no doubt when I'm next in Sri Lanka I shall be going back.

Room Tip: All are lovely

Thanks very much for your kind review - we have recently heard that last part of the road is due to be repaired in the next 3-4 months - so we hope it will make the journey more comfortable and speedier!

“Great hospitality, wonderful views, great walks - will be back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2011

I spent a week at Jungle Tide in early February. This was supposed to be in the dry season but due to freak weather conditions it rained almost all the time! However, this didn't make any difference to the wonderful welcome from the housekeepers, Martin and Rani, and the owners, Sally and Jerry. Jungle Tide is in such a great position (apart from the road to get there - more later) that I spent a delightfully relaxing week reading, walking in the surrounding tea plantations, wandering around their burgeoning garden, enjoying the great food prepared by Rani, and settling down with a glass of cold wine on the balcony to enjoy the wonderful display of birds in the early evening before dinner. The peace and quiet of their lovely garden was a great antidote to the hustle and bustle of where I live in Hong Kong.

The only downside to this place is that the last few kilometres of road to get there from Kandy is in a very bad state and a van or 4WD vehicle is really needed to get there - and even then progress is slow, taking about 45 minutes to get to Kandy. Nevertheless, if you can de-stress, not worry about time, and can put up with a rather bumpy ride, the journey is not a problem as you pass through tea plantations and get some fine views on the way.
Whilst I was there I went into Kandy a couple of times to look around and Jerry and Sally gave loads of tips on what to see and where to go.

I also enjoyed hiking in the area around the house and up through the tea plantations to Pig Rock. It was cloudy or rainy most of the time so I didn't get to experience the wonderful views that must be available from there but the hiking was good anyway - and I'm definitely going back to get to the top of Pig Rock next time!

This is not a place to go if you want a beach holiday or a hectic night life - but for anyone wanting to relax in a beautiful environment and be cossetted by great hosts this is for you.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay - despite the weather! We are always pleased to assist guests with local advice - personally when we are there and by e-mail when we are not!
We are also pleased to say that we have heard news that the road may finally be being upgraded and is due to be completed by April 2012.

“Amazing views - better than expected!”

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at Jungle Tide and we were very happy here. We only stayed for 3 nights but wish we had stayed at least another night as the views were truly amazing. We were only in Sri Lanka for 6 days so we spend 3 nights here and 3 nights in Negombo. In hindsight we should have stayed 5 nights here and 1 night in Negombo.

The bedrooms were furnished very well and the rooms were very comfortable and clean. Towels, shower gel was provided and the rooms were cleaned everyday. If you stay for a minimum of 3 nights Martin and Rani will do your laundry for you including ironing.

We were greeted warmly by both Martin and Rani who were both so amazing and were always on hand to assist. They really didn't allow you to do anything! We opted to eat breakfast and dinner there as we didn't want the hassle of cooking. It is so cheap why would you want to cook and wash up every night??? The food prepared by Martin and Rani were so delicious. We had chicken curry, dahl, rice and cucumber, tomato and onion salad with poppadoms on the first night. 2nd night we had fish curry and the 3rd night we had chicken devil which was so delicious. I even got them to give us a quick cooking lesson on one of the nights.

The road up from Kandy is pretty bad but i believe that this will be dealt with at some point. It took roughly around 40 mins from Kandy town to get up to Jungle tide. This really didn't bother us as the views was stunning. You drive through a stunning tea plantation and we were constantly stopping our driver to take photos. The garden at Jungle Tide is well maintained.

There is currently no internet here which again didn't bother us but according to the owners they will be providing TV's and internet in the rooms shortly. Jerry and Sally will respond to your mails promptly and give you as much info as you need.

I would suggest getting a driver in Sri Lanka to get around. We used Sri Lankan Hires which were really competitive and we had a good driver. Ask for Sampath if possible.

The cost of the room includes the drivers accommodation and our driver was really happy to stay here. If you have breakfast and dinner the drivers food is also included.

Not much more i can really say apart from the fact that this place is truly a hidden gem and we would definitely go back.

Room Tip: All the rooms are fantastic!

“Great!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 May 2011

Me and my wife stayed there from April 20-27, 2011. Chose the place after reading all positive reviews on trip advisor-thanks to the contributors for their feedback .

We were very much y welcomed by Martin and Rani who diligently catered to all our needs.

Imagine a banglow "enconsed" among tea gardens-morning "curtain draw " reveals
lush green surroundings with chirping of the birds. The place is stunning, lovely tea estate in the hills above the town. The last 2 km ride of unpaved road demandsa van or a 4 wheeldrive.

Your meals would be served at your chosen time in the dining area with classy crockery ; delicous tasting Srilankan cusine prepared by Rani. Alternately self catering is also an option due to fully equipped kitchen;but the reaonable price of meals demands that partners should be allowed to enjoy -away from the kitchen. Would also recommend purchase of fruits and vegitables direct from the farms at Kandy veg market known by Mr. Lalith - he would meet all your your transport requirements being a very cautious and punctual driver to go around to Kandy city or explore surrounding aeas (driver"s accomodation is included in the price).

All your requirements would be met by Mr. Ravi Martin- you would find a home away from home. The British owners, Sally and Jerry have done a professional job in decorating this bunglow which would be much appreciated after reading his "journal" among other readings and games available to pass the time. Refreshing walk around the tea state during day time is also good exercise/ passtime. For more "adventorous" the tuk tuk ride to Kandy city is also an option. The bunglaow is ideal for family holidays or group of families but limited by the availability of only 3 bedrooms.

All information on how to reach Jungle Tide is only a "mail" away- just get in touch with Mr. Jerry Smith and all required guidance follows - as was the case with us.

If looking for a quiet place away from the hustle & bustle of city life-this is an ideal place-
I wish I was a painter or writer to while away my time doing just that.

“beautiful, quiet, rural setting, nice meals;”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 March 2011

we planned 4 days to stay but it was so nice that we could not decide to leave; the house is very beautiful with a nice verandah where you can observe nature and birds; the housekeepers Martin and Rani are welcoming and you feel at home with them around; they cook nice meals on request; the road to the house is difficult and a van and your own transport is best choice, to Kandy it is 45 min. but you are up in the hills, in the middle of the tea plantations and you do not need AC tot sleep; We can recommend this bungalow with only 3 rooms.
Excuses for my poor english since dutch is my mothertongue.
