“Comfortable hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We stayed overnight at the Serene Garden Hotel in Kandy on the 13th January 2012 whilst on a 2 day tour with Suresh Tours which we booked whilst staying at the Mermaid Hotel and Club, Kalutara (Suresh is a fantastic local lad and tour guide with his own business. We fully recommend Suresh for any trip that you may wish to take in the area, his tour agenda's are fabulous, he knows all the reputable tour guides and uses them, and he knows everything about his Country and the local area, and he knows the best overnight stay hotels, and
the booking for this stay was completed by Suresh, and he did not let us down). The hotel is a very reasonable 3 star, the room was very clean with all facilities (other than tea/coffee making) and a very serviceable (hot at all times) shower. We were on the second floor, adjacent to the very nice swimming pool and lounge bed area. The balcony from the room had absolutely fantastic views across the city of Kandy. Included in our stay was evening Dinner, and breakfast, and both meals were excellent to say the least, dinner with a large self service traditional Sri Lankan hot buffet, and breakfast in a similar vein with everything available from European, English and traditional fare. The staff we found accomodating at all times, and nothing appeared too much trouble at all. The local monkey wildlife was a joy to watch with their antics, and peeping through the windows to see what was available! Many of the Kandy tourist attractions are nearby, do not miss the Temple - amazing culturally and historically - and the Cultural dancing, well worth watching, if only for the firewalkers! A very comfortable and straightforward hotel. Thanks for the memories Suresh.

“Disappointment”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

I’ve stayed in many hotels around the world and this hotel is what I rate as the worst hotel due to number of factors. I stayed one night walking off the street. The reception staff quoted me an inflated price hoping I would accept. I must also state that the hotel at that time was under construction with the hotel lifts not operational. According to reception staff the only rooms available were rooms located on the lowest floor, which was some 4 floors below. Once we arrived on the lowest floor a strong smell of sewerage was over powering. Inside the room the fan and air-conditioning do not work simultaneously. For a 5 star rated hotel no bar fridge or no directory inside the room. I did not know if room service was provided The room was large and bare. The bathroom is large and reasonably clean. I later protested regarding the smell I was subjected too and requested management to accompany me to experience the smell. However management refused making me think that they are aware of the smell but still insist on placing customers in that location. After talking to a number of others travellers they had the same opinion of the hotel. I would not recommend this hotel to other travellers.

Room Tip: If you have to stay at this hotel request a room on the upper floors

“Clean but a bit over priced hotel on the Hills of Kandy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

We spent in this hotel 2 nights in December; we were satisfied with it. Rooms are very clean. There is a TV (4 channels, partially in English) and a mini bar. Bathroom was OK, with warm water.

Hotel's architecture is interesting; i.e. staircase in the middle of the hotel is open, swimming pool is on the second floor, entrance, lobby and restaurant at the sixth floor, rooms looking down the hill to a nice view. And because of this architecture probably, at night and early in the morning, it was too loud...

With a tuc-tuc (three wheeler) you can get to Kandy downtown for 200 rupees and in 5 minutes.

We find the hotel over priced; we paid about 60 EUR for bed and breakfast and for an average dinner (because of the limited variety of choices) about 10 EUR per person (dinner in Sri Lanka is normally 600 rupees (4 EUR)).

“Very poor service and stincky bathroom- not worth the money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

We had terrible experience here. We arrive around 13.00 to do the check- in but by that time they gave our room to someone else! And the worth thong is that we had to guess it. For about an hour they let us wait and when we asked what's happening they ignored us including our driver. Then they wanted to send us to a cheap hotel named Panorama and when we looked on trip advisor we refused to go there. At the end they gave us their staff room without telling it to us, thinking that we are stupid and we won't look at pictures and see how the rooms look like. Therefore I will marked them on that, bathroom was stincked and very poor service let's see if they will charge us for full price. I would say just be aware if it happens to you them avoid it.

“Wonderful Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

We reached Kandy on Dec 22nd 2011. Serene Garden was amazing and our room was on 5th floor. The view outside was fantastic. Hotel was amazing. Rooms were clean and everything was in place. We missed the cultural hotel in Kandy due to time constraint. The cultural show timing was 5:30PM whereas we reached Kandy around 6:30PM.
Food was good and the early morning view from our room was very pleasant.

Room Tip: Rooms on fifth floor have wonderful outside view.
