“Excellent first impression of Sri Lankan hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Anuradhapura was our first stop in Sri Lanka and I was so impressed by this hotel because of one particular instance of great service. We traveled as a couple and went to the hotel's dinner buffet for a consecutive 2 nights. On the 2nd night, my boyfriend was not feeling well and could only eat fruits at the buffet. When it came time to sign for the meal, we saw that the hotel was charging us only for 1 person's buffet and 1 fruit platter. It turns out that without us asking, the waiting staff had observed that 1 person was only eating fruits, and they proactively and very discreetly adjusted the bill accordingly.

I personally felt very touched by this. Either this hotel offers very good training for its staff, or Sri Lankans are naturally disposed to this kind of respectful, dignified hospitality.

“Good hotel but very pricey, makes it average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

About 4-5 km away from the Anuradhapura town center along the highway, this is a large property on approximately 50 acres of land. There are about 200 cottages, all very well maintained. A nice place to relax after a busy day's work. However, both room tariff and restaurant are highly priced. And, somehow, the hospitality sector staff in South Asian cities are not well trained in the art of hospitality. They are not necessarily rude, buyt the touch of friendliness is missing. This hotel provides free internet access in their lounge. One can pleasantly walk inside the property in the morning along the several kilometers of paths across its cottages amidst numerous trees that resemble a botanical garden. By the way, the place is full of mosquitoes so doors must be kept closed all the time.

“Nice hotel - but could do better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

We arrived quite late to a warm welcome but a middling, end of service, buffet (no a la carte menu).

The room was very pleasant once I had extracted the frog from the bath. Rooms appear to be in blocks of two scattered around the grounds. The walls between them hold little sound insulation - we were with close friends but noisy strangers in the next room would have caused a problem. Staff were helpful and friendly if sometimes less than competent - I had a half hour saga of being re-positioned to catch a wi-fi signal before someone admitted that the phone line was down.

Breakfast provided the usual buffet but added fresh cooked omelette which was very good. The dinner buffet on the second night was also middling. The real highlight was the parkland setting and the huge outdoor pool.

Anyone thinking of going in the next few months should be aware that most roads in Anuradhapura appear to be being reconstructed at the moment. Travel around town is very difficult.

“a good base to see the sights and then relax afterwards..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

the location is lovely - plenty of space around, and the walk around the lake (the bit without the wild elephants) is wonderful.
the pool is very good, and very large, and with very few patrons around - it felt like we had the place to ourselves.
the service was a bit poor at the bar - but we got served eventually, and the bar snacks were good. breakfast was above average, and the staff helpful.
the room was well set up, relatively modern and very clean.
after quite a long journey from colombo, this was a great break - overall - a very good place for 1 or 2 night while visiting the sights of Anuradhapura.

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the drivers quarters, they have more room and are quieter
