“Terrible.. I dont understand why others gave this hotel good review”

the resort is just a old wooden house. The food was awful . When you walk abit, you can feel the floor shaking. It has aircon which is windows type. It sounds like a boat at night when quiet and we were unable to sleep well. I was surprised the resort didnt even provide toothbrush. In short, its totally not worth the price we paid. The first night was a total nightmare.

Indeed the place is quiet and people are friendly.Snorkeling was fun. There is a PayaBeach resort in front of it which provides full facilities and the food there was quite good and cheap. We ended up eating at PayaBeach resort everyday.

for me payabeach is totally isolated. Morning the tide is high and you can go swimming and evening there is nothing to do but stay at hotel. Please consider other beach at tioman.

“Complete adventure trip!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2010

We stayed in this hotel during the time when we took part in Eco-challenge 2010. 3days and 2 nights.

Accomodation
Rooms were fairly decent. A standard room has 3 beds, 1 shower, a dressing table, small TV with Astro connection but limited channels. Quite spacious and can definitely fit 3 people. A little crowded for 3 people. Must bring own toiletries as only towels and laundry plastics are provided.
They have different types of rooms, beach front facing, on the swamps and others. Me and my girlfriend stayed in the chalet accomodation on stilts over the swamp. All rooms are connected by a wooden bridge. There is a water tap outside each room for us to wash up after we return from the beach,
There were Koi fishes in the pond. Very scenic and relaxing. Swamp is kept clean so theres' no smell. In the evenings people would actually sit on the stilts and chat. Of course alternatively you can sit by the beach which is 2 minutes away. White sand, clean and breezy, especially in the evenings. There were a lot of corals to see here.

People
Receptionist was extremely friendly. Generally everyone on the island were nice. Boat uncle was also hospitable.

Transportation
We took a bus from KL to Mersing town. From the local bus station, you can either walk or take a taxi to the jetty. We walked as we were told that it is not very far, about 15mins walk from the bus station. If you are driving, you can park your car at the Mersing jetty itseld. Overnight parking costs RM6 or around there. Safe too. At the jetty, you will need to take a sea taxi or ferry. Options include speed boat, motorboat. Either ways, the journey from jetty to the island is around 1 1.2hours. Fare is RM15 per way.

We had to get a water taxi to get to Berjaya Island from Paya Beach resort for the race. And the rates are between RM40 - RM50. You can even bargain for lower if you want to. If you ask the receptionist nicely, she'll recommend you to her friend who only charges RM30.
The taxis are speed motorboats. When it is dark, they are not allowed to commute passengers as these boats are not properly equipped with proper lighting and safety features. There is no seat belt. One person rides the motor and another person sits on the boat end.

Food
Buffet spread for breakfast, lunch and dinner. BBQ dinner is available on 2nd night. Choices are local and western cuisine. Drinks - fresh fruit juices, coffee, tea and water. There are mineral water dispensers all around the restaurant area so ample of clean drinking water available.

Activities
Ample of activities to be done or free and easy is good as well. Snorkelling trips are available. Equipment rental is at a cost at the shop near reception. You should enquire on the price, book a slot if you are really keen. They usually leave to snorkel very early in the morning and back by noon. Make sure you bring heaps of sun block to protect yourself. Remember to bring your swimsuit! You cannot resist the clear waters for swimming or playing with your pals. Island hopping is also available. Fishing is no longer encouraged. For those who are adventurous, jungle trekking is also available. Need to enquire in advance for a guide to take you in. The jungle called Gunung Datuk is a virgin as there are no proper trails to follow. Cannot be trekked on your own. Need to bring a guide along.
If you want a cheaper and more adventure, you should take part in the eco-challenge, a yearly event held in the Island on the Berjaya Resort grounds. However, it is advisable to stay in Berjaya Resort if you are taking part in this event as the travelling bit might get to you as it is rather costly. We made the mistake of staying in Paya Beach, not knowing that the connection between the resorts is only via water taxi - quite costly for RM4o per way.

Alcohol
Duty free! Cheaper to buy the bottles from the restaurant instead of the duty free shops on the island itself. They charge an extra RM1++ at the shops. Hoegarden is only RM5 here! You can drink and swim all day long.

Shopping
There are a few tourist shops in this place. Highly recommended to scout around each as they can differ in prices. I.e. T-shirt in SHOP A = RM5, T-shirt in SHOP B = RM10. So don't settle for the first thing you see. Look around. They also sell underwater cameras here for about RM35. Good buy for snorkelling trips. Can capture about 50 images only so need prudence use.

“Friendly owners, clean spacious room, nice food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2010

We went to Tioman Paya Resort on a 3D2N package with fivestars from Singapore.
We were really happy with the resort, it was a laid back, basic but decent accomodation.

Nice things about the resort:

1. hairdryer was provided! along with towels and soap...
2. small but clean toilet (abit of rust... under the sink but hey it's not a 5* hotel!)
3. big big room, there was 1 queen and 2 single beds in the room
4. hot shower
5. food was good value (even though as we had a package we were skeptical at first)
6. owners were very friendly
7. room was relatively clean
8. beds were comfortable enough
9. fan was cold
10. relatively ok distance to the beach, about 100 metres
11. there was fresh water provided in front of the hut, so you can wash yourself of sand before entering the room
12. there is a TV in the room

Not so nice things:

1. there wasn't any room service so if you messed up your room on day one, you have to sleep in the mess on day two
2. geckos woke me up a few times.... and i am terrified of them.. there was one living in the room!!!!!!!
3. electricity kept on shutting down at random period
4. air con was not cold enough but the fan helped
5. breakfast was bad.... i don't understand why they don't put fried eggs in the tray... why do we have to order them? (the fried eggs were cold when they came to us..)

“Laid-back atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 July 2009

Originally we wanted to stay at Paya Beach which is right at the beach front, but it was fully booked, and the travel agent recommended Paya Resort. We read the reviews here and felt a little apprenhensive but had already booked a room. When we arrived at Paya Resort, we were pleasantly surprised that although it isn't near the beach, it isn't far away from the beach either. There is a bridge just a few steps away from the resort's restaurant that brings us to the beach. This stretch of the beach is away from the Paya beach crowd and is also nearer to an outcrop with good snorkelling site. We are glad that the corals here are thriving and we saw a big ribbontail ray. We felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves. We walked to Rock Falls, which is right behind the resort, for a refreshing dip straight after snorkelling. We stayed two nights, the room was clean and basic, the air-con and the hot shower were working very well. The chalet-liked rooms were set in a spacious compound and it was always windy when we had our meals at the restaurant. Their dinner set - rice with tofu, vegetable, fish, fried squid rings and soup, was a good deal. Breakfast was local food in buffet style. Overall, nothing fanciful but good value for money if what you're looking for is a good base with a laid-back atmosphere and a good quiet beach.
