To put things into perspective, I have never in my life felt inclined to submit a post to a website regarding accommodations. My experience at Phangan Rainbow Bungalows from January 6 – 12, 2012 has changed that.
Let me just start by saying that Martin and Noy run one heck of an operation. Martin is fantastic to deal with (grasp onto his sense of humor and you’ll get an even better experience) and Noy can cook ANYTHING fantastically. After 4 weeks throughout a number of places in Thailand, their restaurant was one of if not the best place we ate at on the entire trip. The service is what you make of it as you are responsible for ensuring that your own drink is full with their self-service set-up for water, soft drinks, and beer. If your drink is ever empty or you ever find yourself thirsty, it’s really your own fault. Martin and Noy have it set up right with an all-inclusive type feel. They just keep track of everything you drink and eat over the course of the day and then drop a bill on you the next morning for you to settle up. This really saves you from having to carry cash with you at all times which is especially a pain if you plan on spending the day on the beach and/or in the water.
With only 22 units situated either on the beach or within steps to the beach, you definitely become part of a little community for the duration of your stay. You get to know your neighbours pretty well and eventually end up socializing with some of them on a nightly basis. Within a night of being there my friend and I had 10 new friends that we “socialized” with every night for about 4 nights straight. Martin keeps the drink coolers open until about 11 or 12 every night which is plenty long enough if you plan on going out somewhere. If not, you just grab a few extra for last call and hang out in the restaurant until everyone shuts it down for the night.
As for value, it was the best bang for the buck that we had on our entire trip. We stayed in one of the beachfront bungalows (1 DBL, 1 TWN, fan, no hot water) and we got to see the sun set over the water from our porch every night if we so desired. Cost was only 750 Baht per night during the PEAK season. I’m not sure how that would weigh into a traveler’s budget but for a couple vacationers it was top notch. Maybe some of the bungalows a little further back from the water are a little cheaper.
Accessibility is pretty decent. Phangan is a big island anyway so we found it beneficial to have a couple scooters which you can park right on the resort. If a scooter rental isn’t in the budget, it is a 30 second walk to the main road where you can grab a taxi with ease. No different from anywhere else on the island really.
Basically, if you’re traveling to Koh Phangan, whether it be for a Full Moon Party or just to relax, you NEED to try and get into Phangan Rainbow Bungalows. If you can get a beachfront bungalow, even better!! You will not be disappointed.
Room Tip: Definitely shoot for beachfront. Units A1, A2, and A3 have spectacular sunset views.
