“Second to none in Otavalo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

This review is LONG! My wife and I stayed at La Posada del Quinde in March of 2011. To begin, our trip to Ecuador was a happy accident. We had intended on lounging on the beach in Costa Rica. As a former airline employee, we were traveling on companion passes and our flight to Costa Rica (out of Atlanta) was oversold. Not to be deterred from a vacation, we inquired about the destination of the plane at the next gate...Quito. And just like that, basking on the beach turned into an Andean adventure! We stayed in Quito a few days to get our bearings and eventually rented a car and headed towards Otavalo. I used Skype to contact Maggie at La Posada del Quinde to reserve a room. Maggie (an English/Spanish speaking American) was extremely friendly and confirmed our reservation & did a great job of providing directions to the property. On arrival, we were able to park our car inside the property wall for security. Like others have said, the location is excellent for walking to the Otavalo market and other attractions nearby. That being said, don't limit yourself to the market...it's great but there is SO much to see and around Otavalo. We actually extended our stay with Maggie because we were enjoying ourselves so much. Maggie is full of useful information about things to see and do...she really is the consummate innkeeper! In fact, she even offered to wash our clothes before we left as our supply of cool-weather clothes was dwindling (remember we packed for a beach?!).

The rooms at La Posada del Quinde were very nice. The beds were clean and comfortable and the bathrooms were large with excellent hot water supply. The hotel lobby has a large fireplace surrounded by comfortable sofas and chairs. There are books & magazines to read and a computer with internet access for guests to use. The lobby area is uniquely decorated with local artifacts including weavings done by a local artist. If you're interested, you can visit his workshop and purchase original wall hangings. Highly recommended!

Inside the lobby is the restaurant Pachamama. The food is a mix of local cuisine and was fantastic. Try the quinoa stuffed peppers....amazing! We ate dinner at Pachamama every night because the food was so good. Breakfast is also served each morning and the food was superb.

Bottom line, this is THE place to stay in Otavalo. We are already planning our return trip! Also, if you're looking for a great place for a large group or family reunion, ask Maggie about the larger rooms upstairs.

As a follow up: Upon our return to the US, we found out we were expecting a baby. While we were in Otavalo, we visited Jose C's studio to see his weaving loom and purchase a wall hanging. My wife noticed a cute weaving featuring the animals of Ecuador and commented about how cute it would look in a child's room. I called Maggie from the US and asked her if there was a way to purchase the weaving and ship it to me as a surprise for my wife. Not only did she drive up to the studio and purchase the weaving, she shipped it and followed up later making sure it arrived safely. I simply cannot say how great she is!

“Charming hotel, helpful staff”

We stayed here for a couple of nights in order to visit the market in Otavalo.

The hotel has changed its name in recent years, which caused a little confusion when we were in the taxi. Once we found the place, however, it was great.

The rooms are quiet and spacious, although a little basic. There was no safe or TV, and heating was via a portable heater. Nonetheless, it looked out over a charming, well-maintained garden and we fell asleep to the sound of frogs outside!

Wifi was available (free) in the reception, although it was a little patchy in our room. The lounge/restaurant area was cosy, warm and inviting.

The Lonely Planet book praises the restaurant as the best food in Otavalo. Which might well be the case, but that's not stiff competition there and we thought it was good but not spectacular.

The owner, Maggie, was charming and helpful, and even gave us a 10% discount as we were on honeymoon. All in, this place was good value and an excellent choice if you're planning to visit the market.

“Friendly staff, great location”

The room was comfortable, although as other reviews mention, the road noise is a problem in the early morning. The staff were friendly and helpful. Maggie, the owner, did whatever she could to make our stay an enjoyable one.

the rooms and restaurant overlook a beautiful well maintained garden and courtyard.

The pros: Great Location for the Otavalo market, the food at the Pachamama restaurant, and the awesome band playing Andean music on Friday night.

The cons: The road noise in the morning, the lack of a room safe, and the half height curtains in the room lacked privacy.

La Posada del Quinde was charming, delicious food, excellent service, very clean, and above all, the American-born, fluent English and Spanish-speaking owner, Maggie, was very informative and helpful about everyting to see, from markets, to weavers, to surrounding areas of interest. This is a delightful place to stay; my husband and I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Lovely rooms, all overlooking garden and patio below.

“Excellent Small Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Our family and friends stayed three nights at this wonderful small, quaint hotel and loved all aspects. It was very clean and quiet - comfortable beds, plenty of hot water in large bathroom, good breakfast included (choices of eggs, oatmeal, granola, toast, juice, etc.). (We also ate two dinners at La Posada and enjoyed all the food). We especially enjoyed the in town location so that we could walk to the markets (animal and crafts), restaurants, etc.

We came into Otavalo from Quito on the public bus (about 2 hour trip; $2/person with reserved seat) and took a cab to the hotel ($1.00) from the Otavalo bus terminal. Even with our minimal Spanish language, we could manage this adventure without incident.

Maggie, the hotel owner and manager, was wonderful. She and her dog Pacha greeted us and made us feel right at home. She answered our many questions and arranged for a spectacular visit to local weavers! We would strongly recommend this if you are interested in learning about traditional crafts.

We took a cab to the waterfall ($5) and walked back. Follow the cobblestone road and look for the abandoned railroad tracks and follow these into town. The trip is about 3 miles on foot so take water (and goes past some interesting buildings and sights).

Stay here... it is a great place to take some wonderful day adventures into the beautiful local towns! P.S. The courtyard with views of the volcano is a respite from the bustle of the town... our last breakfast was magical out there!
