“Great value; wonderful view into old-style Guayaquil; classic!”

My friends and I stayed at the Orilla del Rio right around the time another reviewer stayed there. I think we stayed on Dec. 14th, 2009. I knew the neighborhood because we had stayed with a friend in this neighborhood some years earlier on a trip to Guayaquil. This is a gated community, very safe and quiet, where well-off Ecuadorians live. It was a treat to be able to stay in the neighborhood again. The hostal is amazing; it feels like a slice out of old Europe or Argentina. Many antiques and photographs of old Guayaquil, interesting artwork. You could spend a day examining the furnishings.

The rooms are fine; mattresses comfortable. We stayed in a dorm room--4 of us. Yes, it's hot in Guayaquil, and yes, the air conditioner sometimes kicks in. But, we adjusted it to our liking and slept well. Two of our party had a private room, and also slept well.

We loved the upstairs sitting room where you could read books and brochures. Also, the swimming pool was a nice treat--I think it's more of a jacuzzi. Just nice to dip into when the humidity and heat of the area are oppressive.

Breakfast was excellent--fresh-squeezed orange juice, a variety of muesli and other cereals, eggs if you wanted them, bread, fresh fruit, etc. all served buffet style, with elegant water glasses, in the outdoor patio, while local birds kept us company.

Oh, yes. Free wireless internet. too!

Economical, and friendly; I'll be back my next trip to Ecuador!

“Shocking...extremely disappointing...”

After researching and reviewing this hotel on the internet we were really looking forward to a comfortable and stylish boutique hotel. Upon arrival this is what we found:

Location
Close to the airport (around 10 mins by taxi)
Fairly close to the city (around 10/15 mins by taxi)
Hotel is like a private home in the middle of a guarded housing complex

Entrance (from street)
Not exactly clear where it is - we drove past it twice

Entrance (inside) and communal areas
The hotel has been decorated with many unusual things so it's quite interesting to browse around

Staff
The Manager is an exceptionally pleasant and helpful man
All other staff appear friendly and helpful

Bedroom
Shocking - cracks in all the walls and skirting boards missing from one side of the wall - felt extremely tatty
Bathroom door was warped and did not open fully without force
Bathroom was not clean in many places
Net curtains were not clean

Disturbance
We were woken up at around 02.00 by a huge air conditioning unit that was right outside our room...we asked the porter to switch it off but then another unit was activated...which apparently would be switched off after 03.00!

Food
Breakfast was simply served to us, without any choice, and without any knowledge of what we were going to get. Most of mine had to be sent back as I have certain dietary requirements... Also most of it was heated up in a microwave!

We booked in for 3 nights but as this place was such a disaster - from start to finish - we checked out after one long night! So bitterly disappointed - but the hotel has a lot of work to do in order to improve. We did discuss all things with the Manager (what a great guy) and he took all comments on board.....let's hope that he actions them as this place really could be very nice! Good luck!

“A beautiful place to stay in Guayaquil!”

I stayed at this beautiful hostel for 3 nights. Everything about this place was great! I am really grateful for the wonderful service provided by the nice staff there. They know how to make you feel at home and comfortable. The food was great also! They picked me up at the airport even when the arrival time was way beyond normal hour for a minimal charge, which was really helpful!! They also have a beautiful tropical garden where you can totally relax!
