My friends and I stayed at the Orilla del Rio right around the time another reviewer stayed there. I think we stayed on Dec. 14th, 2009. I knew the neighborhood because we had stayed with a friend in this neighborhood some years earlier on a trip to Guayaquil. This is a gated community, very safe and quiet, where well-off Ecuadorians live. It was a treat to be able to stay in the neighborhood again. The hostal is amazing; it feels like a slice out of old Europe or Argentina. Many antiques and photographs of old Guayaquil, interesting artwork. You could spend a day examining the furnishings.
The rooms are fine; mattresses comfortable. We stayed in a dorm room--4 of us. Yes, it's hot in Guayaquil, and yes, the air conditioner sometimes kicks in. But, we adjusted it to our liking and slept well. Two of our party had a private room, and also slept well.
We loved the upstairs sitting room where you could read books and brochures. Also, the swimming pool was a nice treat--I think it's more of a jacuzzi. Just nice to dip into when the humidity and heat of the area are oppressive.
Breakfast was excellent--fresh-squeezed orange juice, a variety of muesli and other cereals, eggs if you wanted them, bread, fresh fruit, etc. all served buffet style, with elegant water glasses, in the outdoor patio, while local birds kept us company.
Oh, yes. Free wireless internet. too!
Economical, and friendly; I'll be back my next trip to Ecuador!
