I tumbled across this gem in an internet search. It proved perfect for our beach break last week in Cavtat, Croatia. Cavtat is a large village about 15 minutes taxi ride from Dubrovnik airport. The centre of Cavtat is pedestranised and only taxis with a permit can alight in the centre. This may mean an extra walk to the Hotel so its worth checking, if possible, before you take the taxi (this costs 100 Kuna- approximately £10/$US15). The hotel can arrange taxis for the return trip
Hotel Villa Kvaternik, housed in a renovated former school, is a bed and breakfast establishment, located at the far end of the village, near Restaurant Galija ( which serves good fish and seafood). It is accessed via an alleyway up 35 fairly steep steps. Unfortunately the entranceway is not labelled but the building is literally on the right hand side at the top of the stairs. The B& B, which has 5 bedrooms opened about 2-3 years ago. We took a superior deluxe seaview room. The room was large, spotlessly clean, simply furnished with a sofa, which I believe can double as a an extra bed. The bathroom was a reaonsable size with shower and bath and basic toileteries supplied. What made our room more special was its separate outside entrance, giving more privacy. We had a beautiful view over the sea and the terracotta roofs of the village. All rooms are airconditioned.
Breakfast is served under large umbrellas on the terrace. The available selection is generous, including orange juice, cereal, bread/jam, fruit and cooked options.
Staff spoke very good english and were always cheerful with a sense of humour and willing to help.
Beaches in the area are rocky and in walking distance from the hotel. Sunbeds are available for hire and in some cases parasols are available too. I can particularly recommend the beach below Restaurant Rokotin, which served reasonably priced fresh fish and seafood. The service was excellent and very clean toilet facilities are available to beach users.
Cavtat is not a place for wild nightlife but it is very relaxing and does have a pleasant buzz with a number of good restaurants and bars to choose from. Local buses run from the village, although it is pleasant to take the boat across to Dubrovnik (45 mintues).
