“Great and quiet hotel, hard beds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2011

My girlfriend and I booked this hotel in advance for our short stay in Lijiang (two nights). It is located a bit outside Lijiang, at the entrance of Shuhe old town (which is similar to Lijiang's old town, but not as nice). The trip from the airport to the hotel will cost somewhere between ¥80-100 (you can just agree on ¥100 if you are not stingy, but be sure to take an official cab), a trip to Lijiang old town about ¥20. From the hotel, one can go directly to Shuhe old town, which is nice for a walk around, some tourist shopping and maybe some dinner - although Chinese on a level that one can order food is good-to-have, seeing as most restaurants do not have English or picture menus.

The room was nice and very quiet, located on a third floor (walk-up); the hotel is not a high-rise, but rather a number of three-storey buildings arranged around a nice small garden with pool. The whole setting is quite picturesque, especially with the mountain in the background. The room is spacious, and includes a nice bathroom; the hot water supply is not unlimited, but replenishes quickly (~30-60 minutes) when exhausted. The TV has some US cabel channels (HBO, Max, CNN, etc.); these do not work reliably though. Max was the least reliable and hardly worked, and even HBO would often freeze for anything from a few seconds to several minutes. There is a computer with internet connection in the room; the PC is slow but usable. My only gripe with this room is the bed, which is extremely hard (think 5cm / 2 inches of mattress on a wood board) and makes sleeping not too pleasant.

The staff were friendly, though there are only 1 or 2 who actually speak English - and even then not well enough to settle matters via the room phone; I needed to go down to the front desk to make myself understood. They managed to arrange a day trip to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain for us, if only via a rented taxi (¥250 for the day). There seem to be buses going there from Lijiang, but either the staff did not know the city well enough, or did not speak English well enough to tell us how to go about this. It seems better to arrange trips by yourself, rather than trust the hotel staff to do it. They were always ready to tell taxi drivers where to take us, though.

The breakfast buffet is nothing spectacular, and is in an unheated restaurant (quite cold in the morning, but normal for the region).

“charming and clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2010

cute, boutique, local-feeling hotel. Not quite 5-star, but a solid 4-stars. At 500RMB a night it is also a good deal - considering the quality/cleanliness and the wonderful buffet breakfast.

The restaurant opens up directly to the Ancient city - which is basically just a big maze of tchotchke shops (not that it is a terrible thing). Once you leave the hotel you are harassed by folks trying to sell you a horse ride around town. The restaurants in the Ancient city are not good - the food quality is not good and they don't seem very sanitary.

The staff are relatively friendly, especially when compared to the indifferent/rude behavior of most local hotel operators in China.

Ver satisfied with stay in quiet, but busy Shihe area. Good rooms, good breakfast, Taxi to Old Town Lijiang only 2 Euros, you can hire Taxis at the square nearb, they will take you to Tiger Leaping Gorge, wait three hours and drive you back for 40 Euros if you bargain good.

“Wonderful view of the Jade Dragon Mountains from our room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 March 2009

The Conifer hotel was the most comfortable hotel we stayed at in our 3 weeks in Yunnan Province. Lijiang is wonderful. The hotel staff was so very gracious and helped us with booking airline flights from LiJiang to Kunming. The gardens are very nice and great for leisure walk at night. The proximity to the "Old Town" shops was also a pleasant surprise.

“HIdden Gem in LIjiang ! Go for it !”

I booked this hotel initially thru ctrip (a great internet booking site in China - English Site) and thought I was booking a hotel at the Lijiang Ancient City ;-)

Guess travel always sprng a surprise to you and when I was picked up at the airport, the taxi driver told me there was 2 ancient cities in Lijiang ; Lijiang & Shuhe Ancient cities.

I was ready to change hotels when I realized that this was at the Shuhe Ancient city but the cab driver advised me against it saying that there were people who enjoyed this city more than the famous Lijiang ancient city.

Seeing that I arrived at 8pm at night, I reckon why not. It turned out to be the bext decision for the next 3 nights I stayed at this hotel.

This is a brand new 4 star hotel located right at the entrance of the Shu He Ancient City. With a stay at this hotel, you do not have to pay the admission charge as guests are able to walk right into the city via the back gate at the cafe, saving you some money !

The rooms are fantastic at the price paid. I paid $450 for a deluxe room and was afforded a room with views of the famous Jade Dragon Ice Mountain righ there at the background. Room is very very very clean and well designed. Bed extremely comfortable and the best deal, free internet thrown in with a personal PC per room !

Breakfast is extremely good and one of the better ones tasted at 4 star hotels in China. The checkin was efficient and the bellhop has tons of advice on where to go !

The Shu He ancient city is 1000 years old abt 200 more than the famous Lijiang ancient city. There is real charm in this quieter city without the hordes of tourists, people are abt doing thier own thing and you are not faced with the barrages of touristy shops selling nothing but souvenirs.

The best part of the hotel is the good food at the restaurant, I had room service dinner and dinner at the hotel and the service and food quality was extremely good. The location of the hotel makes it an easy drive to the best attractions in Lijiang and yes if you must go to Lijiang which we did in the afternoon although prettier at night it is only a RMB 20 dollar ride there and less than 10 minutes....so you really have the best of both worlds by staying at this hotel.

The best thing of this hotel is the quietness in the night....I almost felt like I was back in a farmhouse in New Zealand...quiet, calm, cold and beautiful lights hanging in the horizon.

I would stay here anytime again over Lijiang...which has become a noisy little city due its UNESCO rating and swamped by KFC, Mcdonalds and busloads of people.
