I stayed at Ishiba Ryokan for a weekend sight-seeing trip to Hirosaki. We had to wait to check-in until 3pm, but they let us keep our bags there while we went sight-seeing. Also, although not everyone on staff spoke English, the man who owns it did, which was a great help.
Our room was really spacious I thought. Like other ryokans, the room is tatami and you sleep on futons (so if you're not into sleeping on the floor this probably isn't for you).
When we first checked in the lady showed us to our room and served us green tea and senbai, a Japanese cracker. Later, while we were out, they set-up our futons for us.
The best thing about Ishiba Ryokan is the location. It is a five-minute walk to Hirosaki castle park and about 20 min walk to the Hirosaki JR station / Hirosaki bus terminal. Also, it is right next to a Christian church (so it was very easy to find) and a convenience store. We walked everywhere, but if you wanted Ishiba Ryokan had bicycles that you could use.
Also, although we booked a room with a shared bathroom, they upgraded us for free to a private bathroom, which was greatly appreciated. The bathroom is Japanese style first you wash your body, then you relax in the bath), but the shower head can be put high on the wall, and we just showered as normal.
My only two minor complaints was that the bathroom was cold. The main room had a heater and the futons keep you really warm, but the bathroom area would stay cold. But, then again this was Aomori in October, so the weather was colder. Also, the bathroom was worn, however still very clean, which is my main priority.
OVERALL, for travelling on a budget (which we are two college students, so definitely on a tight budget) it was a great place to stay, especially if you want the experience of staying at a Japanese ryokan (I've looked at the prices for other ryokans which can be hundreds of dollars per night). Staying at Ishiba Ryokan definitely made the trip to Hirosaki amazing!
