I work hard all year... this IS the kind of hotel that I feel I deserve!
About 1/2 hour from Bodrum airport - 90 TRY in a cab - so a good choice for a long weekend when time is at a premium.
I had high hopes for this hotel due to the great reviews and the fact that they are in the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group (have stayed in those before and felt very spoilt). We were not disappointed. From beginning to end every need was catered for with charm and a real personal touch.
Checkin - very swift. We were given 2 sea view rooms despite our booking being for normal deluxe rooms. Even walking to the rooms was a treat - incredible vistas through unexpected walkways and windows. The whole place has an eclectic feel and you get the impression that somebody has put a lot of thought into every detail. This goes for the rooms, the public parts, the pool area. Everything.
Room. Big and light. Bathroom - functional and clean. This was a real treat - though not "sumptuous" in its furnishings it was again eclectic and fun. My safe wouldn't open on the first day and they sent somebody to fix it within approximately 2 minutes. Only gripe was the air-con not being as efficient as I would have liked. The overall temperature is centrally controlled so even if you turn it onto the max you are only getting the minimum temparature set centrally. We complained at reception and it was duly changed. But the next day it went back to being too warm again. Probably the time of year since it was slightly hotter during our visit than they might normally expect I guess.
Pool area. Lovely. No issue to get fresh towels whenever you like (even these are far more funky than in any other hotel I have visited). The sunbeds were plentiful and no issue with people reserving them early. We stayed by the main pool with its bar service, but the olympic pool also has plenty of sunbeds and I never saw anybody down there. There is even a phone to call the bar from there if need be. Nice!
The only point really is that the piped music was way too loud - think cafe coste, Buddha bar style chill out music - not usually offensive - but by day 4 .....
Didn't use the tennis courts but did use the fitness centre. This is well equipped (4 running machines and some other cardio items, plenty of freeweights and weight machines). The problem is the air con. It was horribly hot. The room faces the sun all day and as there is a steam room and sauna down there it gets beyond humid. Horrible. I managed a run every day but it was with utter dread that I embarked on my 5 k.
Unfortunately the marmara beach (jetty in town) was shut during our visit. Saw it advertised and it looked fabulous so was a bit disappointed by that. I think it opens mid May.
Restaurant. Breakfast was a lovely selection. Loads of fresh fruit and quirky local items alongside the usual eggs etc. I would be happy to have breakfast here on the terrace every day of my life. Lunch and dinner are from the same menu. All very good.
Last but not least.. the STAFF! Fantastic! Soooo helpful and sweet and kind. Yulia on reception, Nino the guest relation manager, Hemmet (may have spelled that wrong - he works at the pool bar) all get special mention but really everyone was fantastic. None of the usual attitude you get from a chain hotel. Which brings me to a point.. The Marmara IS a chain, BUT this hotel feels like a special one-off. A truly classy offering which hits just the right note. Loved it.
