I found Tropic a great bargain for what it offered. I thought the pool area was decent size and quite quiet, despite the parking lot location, I found it relaxing enough to sit and read on several occasions. My room was on the back side on top floor at the very end, facing another set of apartments and a side view of the pool. It wasn't dark at all. I LOVED the kitchen on the terrace with the slats for privacy, and found it great to be outside and inside at the same time! Also, there was one wide open, unslatted window, which gave lots of light. For me, sufficient light came from the sliding glass doors into the room ti make it bright and airy. The room was quite large, the bathroom was particularly spacious, wih lots of storage space and a nice deep tub. The room decor was a bit dated, with little to no effort given to any particular sense of style. The television was adequate, although I thought the placement over the sofa (instead of over the mirror at the foot of the bed, was odd. took two days (because of holidays) to get my safe working, but the nice women at front desk let me keep my valuables there. The room had Internet, but not wifi, so my iPad was rendered inoperable for the occasion, which was a bit inconvenient, as there was only one internet cafe in the area, and it was attached to a restaurant, so not very approachable. The location was very convenient, less than 5min walk to the beach. Not many walkable restaurants, though, so did need a car, and parking was secure and plentiful. The walk-to beach was decent, although it had a lot of pine needles and rocky bits, but was still nice swimming area within. (beaches down the way at St. Leu were nicer). There was a nice shopping center nearby (within walking distance) with a good grocery store, an Internet restaurant (Chez Laila's), a laundry and several small shops. Not St. Gilles, but ok if no car! Contrary to misleading assertion, hotel is NOT in St. Gilles beach (although may well be in the St.Gilles district), and you need a car to get the 10min drive from L'hermitage to (the supremely overrated) St. Gilles pedestrian tourism area. Overall, Tropic was a great deal, was clean, quiet and comfy. It was a SELF-catering apartment, not a hotel room, so not having 24hr attendance wasn't a problem for me. Recommended, especially for families.
