“Not bad but not exceptional neither...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2011

A Swiss family of 5, on tour in Peru...

We stayed 2 nights, once before visiting islands on Lake Titicaca, and second time upon return from that tour. We had thus on both occasions a 2-bed room and a 3-bed room.

The hotel is quite average. Nothing really exceptional, nothing really bad... As we had several rooms at different moments, we noticed that there were quite some differences in the rooms (e.g. more or less luminous, more or less cold). Bathrooms were clean. Warm water always available. Breakfast was average according to the standards we were used to during our tour in Peru.

Location of the hotel is good, close to a peatonal street (Jr Lima) with shops and restaurants, and to a small plaza (Parque Pino).

Room Tip: In winter (e.g. July-August) check that you get a warm room...

“We got a discount, but had to pay a high price for that!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2011

We were walk in customers in the week after the Puno problems had cleared. The hotel seemed nearly empty and offered us a discounted rate of S80 for a matrimonial room including buffet breakfast. We would later in our stay have to deal with hostile staff that obviously thought that we paid too little and gave us a terrible attitude.

The first morning there was no buffet breakfast bar: just two buns, jam, coffee, tea and juice. We asked if we could get fired eggs. The already very unfriendly waiter snapped back at us that we paid a too low price for the room and would not get any eggs. After insisting we finally got one egg each.

Two guests were sitting on the table next to us and asked what our rate was, apparently they paid quite a bit more and were obviously a bit upset to learn that we paid S80.

As soon as we were back in the room the reception called and asked if we check out today. We told them that we stay one more night..."hmm, ok, but we got a tour group coming". 10minutes later another person called to ask if we would checkout. Obviously they did not want us in the hotel.

The 2nd day breakfast was actually a proper buffet as there was a tour group staying.
But just as the day before the waiter was as grumpy as they can possibly come and we had to ask for everything, even coffee was only served with a frown when we asked politely. The most ridiculous part was when the waiter hastily cleared the yogurt drink from the buffet after we had each taken a small bowl of cereal with yogurt. Is this a hotel or kindergarten?

We already decided that we no longer wanted to put up with this hostile staff but were de facto kicked out this morning when they called our room and complained that we had told our rate to the other couple. We explained that is was their waiter that had made such a fuzz about our lower rate during breakfast that the others overheard that we paid less. And we are certainly not going to lie to fellow travelers about our room rate.

The final straw was when they told us at 10am that we had to leave immediately since the hotel was fully booked and the check-out time had passed. Too bad that the day before they told us that check-out is at 12:30pm not 9am as they claimed now.

We have never experienced such a hostile staff ever. And we spent hundreds of nights in hotels around the world for leisure and business.
After all it was the hotel that offered us this rate. We did not force anybody to lower the price to S80.

Thankfully we found plenty of other half empty hotels in the area that gladly took our business. We understand that the Hotels in Puno have suffered from the long road closures due to the miners strike... but please don't take it out on the Tourists that do come here.

“A bit barroque but ok”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 April 2011

The Buho Hotel in Puno is not a bad choice as it is right in the center of town, next to the main street and had a friendly staff.

The decoration both of the common areas and the rooms was quite barroque but it was clean and cozy.

The best thing was their reliability. We left our passports in the dresser drawer and went off to Cusco without realising. They found the passports and sent them to us in a taxi saving us a lot of headaches.

“4-night stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2011

We stayed 4 nights in this location to visit Lake Titicaca and surroundings.
The staff did not speak English but did their best to help in any way they could, service was always prompt whenever we asked for something.
They were helpful in calling for a doctor that did house-calls (altitude sickness really hit my husband along with flu). They had oxygen available.
Not much of a view from the rooms but quiet and had good sleep. Walking distance to main street called Lima and Plaza de Armas.
4-story, nicely decorated but somewhat dark in the hallways. Continental breakfast included (bread, jam, cheese/cold cuts, fruits)
No heating in room but I think heaters available if needed; no hot water during the day.
